Back a few years ago when me and other newsie fans were having a chat, I asked them why they thought this movie flopped when it came out, but is now a cult classic today. They all agreed it was a great question. One said that the world wasn't ready, and I agree. This is such a great story and this film will always be one of my favorites. Like Kenny said, it has a lot of heart, and hope, and courage. I think it was a really great point in American history.

this whole thing is just a train wreck from beginning to end; which is a shame-- j.a.c. redford's score and allan menkin's music are actually pretty good. and if you look at the technicians behind it, it's actually an impressive hollywood team. but the whole project just seems like a convergence of a lot of talented components that just didn't spark. from a downright -forgettable generic cast, to a saccharin script, to boring single-camera, tightly shot musical sequence coverage

wow i didn't know that Cristian bale was English till like 3 hours ago, but now that i listen to him u can rlly hear is English accent in his singing and talking and when he fakes a new york accent its more English than new yorkien!

Twin, thanks so much for sharing this with us. I've watched musicals for decades and the almost perfection of the chorography/music and talent is one of the best I've ever seen.  The organization and heart put into this is evident in the product. I love watching this. When our kids were little, I'd play it for them and they liked it. It was something I would allow because of the content. :) Not like most Hollywood trash of today.

CB is an amazing actor. I just recently became a fan of his work after watching LIttle Woman for the first time, then I had to find out what other movies he has done, found out he was in Newsies, I've loved Newsies since the first time I saw it many years ago. Now I can't stop watching it!

@spot4life14 I'm pretty sure that's Trey Parker (Blink). They're practicing Seize the Day, and if you watch the placing in the movie, that's where Trey would be standing. Besides, Gabriel Damon (Spot) doesn't really dance--the closest he gets is his solo in "King of New York."

Unfortunantly this film came out at a time that was hard on non cartoon musicals. It was a total flop but I think if it was released today, in a world where Mama Mia and High School Muscial rule the screen it would have been a huge success. I wish the Disney channel would air this film every now and then.

lordofwrath88, I completely agree with you! I LOVE this story and the boys acting each part, wow, they were brilliant!

I didn't know about this musical/film when it came out, I only heard about it about 5/6 yrs ago and was blown away by the passion in it, puts that High School Musical crap to shame!

They should air this once in a while and see how many people enjoy it, I'm sure a lot would.

haha thats what happened to me! We had it recommended to us by a worker at blockbuster a few months back because a friend and I couldnt find a movie. We lovd it so much we decided to watch some of the special features. When Christian began to speak our mouths simultaneously dropped and we were like WHAT, Hes British?! haha Its sad but all we had ever seen him in was batman. I was definitely hooked on him afterwards! Ive been on a mission to see ALL his films ever since! =)

My fav character is Spot Conlin because he steps in to support the newsboy's strike.

In fact, he is the core reason for the success of the strike - without Spot Conlin - they would have never been successful.
