I see Silver McKee features in this video - He was a bare knuckle street fighter - my mother dated him when they accidently bumped into my father. Silver said "I'll fight you for her", My father replied, "No thanks you can have her".
Liam Hannaway is entering his 17th day of the hunger strike he has took upon himself for the suffering and abuse being carried out in Maghaberry Prison against Irish Republicans. He has lost 28lbs and is determined to see this through. We must as Irish Republicans stand in protest against the cruelty's being carried out in Maghaberry Prison and not fail Liam.
im from the falls ,but spent many a good time in the market,i knew eamonn and sean feeley and john powell ,and malt dalton's fish and chip's ,i live near the glennon sister's here in the usa,two great market women .
Sentimental nonsense from an ultra conservative mono cultural clannish community like all working class areas. Raze the markets to the ground and disperse it's shaven headed, pitbull walking Celtic-top wearing brainless idiots to Antrim town.
No we were paid to leave...I WAS JUST A YOUNG LAD..And I found a new way to live life, without hate...Back then I was trigger happy...And I still hate the British to this very day...But now the world has changed..And indeed..Belfast is beautiful once again..The Brits will fall flat on their face as they join America in the so called fight for Democracy in Iraq, and Afg,,Hang in there...The Brits will be broke soon..And Sinn Feinn has already seen this...Do you want peace?.
My father and uncle grew up in Norton Street in the old Markets - they should never have been allowed to knock it down to replace it with a ghetto, another disgraceful decision by Belfast City Council & the HE. They just issued a vesting order and a whole way of life disappeared forever. My grandmother died shortly after being forcibly removed the house she'd lived in all her life. In some countries they call that ethnic cleansing, here we call it urban renewal. :(
Those photo's are from the Rushlight site and you are welcome to them I hope you enjoy them, and I appreciate you mentioning where you got them, a shame the Belfast Forum didn't do the same.Joe Graham Rushlight The Belfast Magazine.
Sweet vid..cool pics..I left Belfast in 1971.This brought me back for a sec..My Mother still has many photos of back then.I lived in Belfast, attended Christian Brothers school on Oxford Street. Thanks for bringing me back to my past..And to willip50..Peace ...We were most likely childhood enemies..The hate is gone...Thank God
Thanks for posting this - I was born & raised in Belfast in Sandy Row and the pictures could just as well be of there as the Markets. It's great to have these images preserved and published - can you do some more?
