What kills me about the ending was that it was so painful, but it was realistic. And when Night realized this painful reality in the special, that's what made the story so sad... In the special's ending, it's not that he couldn't have stayed together with Riiko, right? It's that he CHOSE not to, because he loved her so much and realized that even if he were able to survive, he would never be able to provide her with a normal life of happiness. And this song just made everything sadder.

To say the truth, when I first started watching, I also liked Soushi better, but once I saw how nice Night was to Riiko, my heart was stolen by that awesome robot, he is like the most perfect human being, being both pure in the heart and also having emotions!!! I love him!!
