Tradition on choosing boys over girls are a big problem in countries like China, India, and other asian countries. I don't know what get's in them but i feel bad about those same families that chose it because their son have a big chance of not getting married. Poor bachelors.
@energyalt56 it depends on the place or if you're minority. People that is minorities in the country are given chance to raise 2 and if they are living in the country side, they can raise 3. In rural areas, it's only one child policy. Get your facts straight.
My sister in law adopted one of these girls. As a result we have been so blessed by our niece from China. We soon learned she was born on the same day as her new cousin *my son* so they share a birthday. She was really just meant for us. He later learned to speak Mandarin and shares that with her now too. These children are a true blessing for the families in the west who adopt them. I hope somehow her birth mother knows what a gift she gave us. This litle girl is well loved and has a good life.

In my opinion this unintended social problem is not the fault of the Chinese government (for once). To avoid becoming overpopulated, it is necessary to limit births no matter what. If i was in the Chinese communist party, I would make an amendment to the one child policy: parents who have, keep, and raise girls well get an annual bonus from the government.

This is why China can't be used as a model for how to deal with the over-population model. These adoptive parents just want kids and I imagine that it would probably eat them up to think that their kids were stolen from their real parents. No, Nationalities other than Han Chinese can have 2 Children, but the Nationalities of both parents must be non-Han Chinese. Han Chinese also can have 2 Children, if their first Child is a girl, and this policy only for Han-Chinese who live in remote area.

I remember that when my mom came for me. My friends got interveiwed in that video and I was interveiwed for the newspaper because I was there watching this when I was 4 years and this does happen to me. Right after my dad died my mom wasn't ok but China isn't a bad place some people can't afford to have children so they have no choice and I went to China! Boys are better to have then boys because they are said to take care of the parents as they get older but the girls go off and get married.
I blame the tradition. Imagine having the mindset that boys are better in all of China's thousands of years of history. It would take more than a decade to change that thought. But then also, if you think about it, these parents gave up their child because they couldn't care for them. They all want sons because traditionally the children support the parents retirement and the males income is a good bit higher. Some moms suffocate the girl babies at birth. And a few places sell baby girls to restaurants for people that think eating babies is a way to cure male impotence.

There is actually a social problem in CHINA, and many parents are seeking to find their own children. This whole National Geographic coverage is so sanitized on painting China law policies as horrible and Americans as this better people by taking adoptees in.

Most of these girls get murdered. I'd say 20 to 25 million kids are killed in the womb, killed right after birth, or killed in orphanages with horrible conditions EACH YEAR. Chinese rarely have any respect for life and this is one aspect of that.

@heituzi Whether or not you consider abortion to be full out murder is a matter of philosophy and opinion, but I think everyone can agree how sick it is that infanticide occurs so much in China. Many women are forced to have abortions due to the threat of penalties inflicted by the government on to the parents. It's illegal now for the Chinese government to give abortions by physical force, so at least that's something good.

When you see abortion advertised for 7 dollars on trash cans, advertised on TV as if it were funny, kids and old ladies sitting in front of advertising billboards and screens for "easy, painless abortions" - and when you see that kind of thing day after day, just the sheer scale of it should challenge what you previously thought.

I talked to my uncle's neighbor, who has a son, about why he prefers sons over daughters, and he said it's because daughters will marry into someone else's family while sons stay in the family. That's stupid reasoning. -_-

No, Nationalities other than Han Chinese can have 2 Children, but the Nationalities of both parents must be non-Han Chinese. Han Chinese also can have 2 Children, if their first Child is a girl, and this policy only for Han-Chinese who live in remote area.

I remember that when my mom came for me. My friends got interveiwed in that video and I was interveiwed for the newspaper because I was there watching this when I was 4 years and this does happen to me. Right after my dad died my mom wasn't ok but China isn't a bad place some people can't afford to have children so they have no choice and I went to China! Boys are better to have then boys because they are said to take care of the parents as they get older but the girls go off and get married.

I blame the tradition. Imagine having the mindset that boys are better in all of China's thousands of years of history. It would take more than a decade to change that thought. But then also, if you think about it, these parents gave up their child because they couldn't care for them. At least rather than keep the girls and have them live in poverty, they allowed for them the chance to get adopted.

1. In the USA, "white" children are comparitively less available for adoption.
2. Americans are wary of adopting children from Russia, Ukraine, former USSR, because they're afraid the baby will have F.A.S.
3. Americans are afraid to adopt Black American children out of fear that the child was born addicted to drugs and/or have F.A.S.
4. With Native American babies, same as above.
Chinese babies are less likely to have F.A.S. or drugs in their system.

I just saw this full video =( the baby girls are lucky to be adopted.. one couple was adopting the 2nd baby, the first one had been left in a park =( the (adopting) mom went back to that park and put a poster with her girls picture of when she was left and now happy and well in the U.S.

If you were to change families at age fifteen, it would be awkward, But we are all she has known since ten months. She is an American girl, as if she were born here. Graymoths, Our daughter is a smart, strong, caring person.
She knows her history, and is proud of her heritage and roots. I don't think anyone has a perfect answer to what will become of "These girls" there all individuals. We sacrificed to adopt her, and just want whats best for her. We hope for happiness for her birth parents.

I wonder how life for those children would be in the future? Will they have trouble "fitting in" with their families?
