Couldn't a historic bridge like this been OK to foot traffic only. The weight of traffic is what hurts a bridge so much. A fishing pier perhaps? Excellent video.
I know this may sound crazy but some people say the Mothman is responsible for the collapse of the silver bridge because there was a sighting of him on the bridge flying away then the bridge completly broke apart
The St. Marys Bridge could very well have collapsed in a manner similar to the Silver Bridge at some point. There wasn't any way to inspect the critical part of the links of the eyebars (one of which had failed on the Silver Bridge). That particular design of bridge did not have *any* structural redundancy, meaning if the one link failed -- the entire bridge would collapse. West Virginia did the right thing in demolishing this bridge and replacing it with a cantilever span.
This is about the St. Mary's Bridge, which was situated upstream from the Silver Bridge. It had identical design characteristics. It was demolished following the Silver Bridge tragedy because there wasn't any way for engineers to visually identify whether the pins holding the eyebar to the suspending rods were in good condition on a functioning bridge. The Silver Bridge fell due to an invisible hairline crack in a pin. Both bridges have been replaced by cantilevers.
@hwyfan The hairline crack was actually found in an eyebar retrieved from the bottom of the Ohio river by divers a few days following the collapse.
Go to "The Silver Bridge Disaster" done by OUlearn on YT,it is a very good and accurate account. When the eyebar fractured completely (the crack had been there since the manufacturing) t the opposing eyebar vibrated off of the dowel pin and the entire bridge collapsed.
...my mom was a native to Malden... she later moved to Charles Town. She had just gotten off the Silver Bridge (been off for like 10 minutes) in '67 when the bridge collapsed... saw it in the rearview...

Oh I see this is the demolition of the bridge of St. Mary's. Strangely enough I did not find a sole article for information on that bridge in wiki.
The least you could do is edit description and label it as the sibling of the Silver Bridge. This was a demolition though.

rip off...this isn't about the SILVER BRIDGE...it's about it's 'sister' bridge...same design, but NOT the one that collapsed in december 15, 1967!
