It just cracks me up how Rev Gary Davis is singing a gritty, heartfelt song about loss, redemption and conviction, sung in a voice like the apocalypse and Donovan is crooning on about some lily-white queen tooling around the palace in her finery.
I think Donovan and Shawn Phillips were awestruck by being in the presence of a true blues Great. Hell,any singer that had to follow that voice and the depth of feeling would be intimidated!
He actually insisted on having banjo on quite a few recordings, I don't really think it works, regardless of the technical proficiency of the banjo player.
