can someone point out which of these dos dnd games have actual plots, usually when I play them, you just start in the middle of nowhere with no clue of what to do...
@trixx111 There are a few PC versions available on Amazon & Ebay. Don't know if you still have a floppy disk drive though. If not then you can find the game available for download on some abandonware sites.
I loved these old SSI games. Sadly "RPGs" these days are nothing more than FPSs with token stats thrown in (I'm looking at you Bethesda) or life-ruining MMOs.
It's sad that I can't get nearly half the enjoyment out of today's RPGs than I did with original AD&D. No more AD&D after Neverwinter Nights...now you have retarded half assed RPGs like Dragon Age making a complete mockery of original AD&D. Consoles have completely ruined it for us original RPGers. Hopefully one day Atari will pull their head out their asses and bring AD&D back, but I'm not counting on it
I played these games AGES ago. I was able to beat both Champions of Krynn and Death Knights of Krynn but I could never figure out Dark Queen and would love to play them again now that I'm older and smarter than I was years ago :)
Very good info - especially about a DOSBox front end. So many don't bother to tell people about them and then the person gets frustrated with the command line option and never end up playing the game - so 5/5 for video, and advice!
You should be able to get it running if you use the DOS emulator DOSBox. There is even a front-end to DOSBox called D-Fend Reloaded which gives a graphical interface to use the DOSBox with, in case you don't want to use the command line. Just google it and give it a go. Happy adventuring!
I remember I played Dark Queen of Krynn on my old Macintosh Classic II and the music sounded great but then I played the PC version on a PC and the music was really awful MIDI stuff like in this video! Why did the Mac version have better music???
Back in the day, music used FM Synthesis. Technically what FM Synthesis instruments were, were synthesized MIDI instruments. I love FM Synthesis. As for Mac, I believe it relied on its own sound card.
Love these old games! I remember either cranking or turning down the difficulty often depending on where I was. Sometimes when facing a powerful opponent, I'd let him hit me just to see how much he could dish out and/or if I could still comeback and win after losing several of my party.
It was very fine for the AMIGA tho.. I gamed the krynn series on c64, but had to start a new party when queen was due.. sad, but still.. I loved those games! :)
I must have been born too late for these games, cause when I tried playing them just for a taste of dragonlance gaming... I just couldn't handle them at all. Dark sun on the other hand...now that was an oldie with some serious flavor
I think this was the first Gold Box game to include incidental music for major plot points, not just the intro music.

@caraelagarto If you are referring to the DnD gold box games, they all have plots. You just need to read the journal entries when prompted to.

@imawsumz Back when it first came out it wasn't bad though. I remember playing this game for hours on end.

I was really young when I played this...really don't remember it very well in terms of storyline...just loved the style of game it was.
Never played Dark Queen of the series, but the others were ace! Would love to get a hold of this for the PC.

Is the video from the C64 or IBM (MS-DOS) version?
