Woah, that's tough. (From my experience) it's really hard to handle a suicide threat, particularly when it's someone you know online (through YT, or wherever).
The one time I knew of a serious intention of one of my (close) friends, who lives in a different country, it was hell! Esp when they logged off. Thankfully I had their phone number and managed to get an answer and talked them down.

You would like to think that you would respond to their cries for help even if you knew they weren't sober. BUT if you DID know they weren't sober, if you asked them what they were on and they told you honestly, your reaction to the situation would have been more fitting, and you yuorself might have experienced less anxiety if you realized that in fact they probably wouldn't even remember any of it the next day.
In the end I think it's the anxiety they caused you that is bothering you.

Why? Part of me wanted to reach out and get help. The other part of me didn't want to talk to anyone at all, because that part of me did NOT want to stop myself.
This was 17 yrs. ago, before the 'net was a common household entity. Had it been, I probably have contacted someone that way instead of my shrink. Not publicly though, it'd likely have been PM or email - again, no one "close" to me.

I was going to take 27 nitroglycerines. Instant heart attack, no time to revive. Wrote a LONG letter, the whole shabang. Trust me, I was truly suicidal. But that doesn't erase second thoughts.
I didn't know my shrink well yet. I was sent to him a couple months before. Had to dial 411 and all that jazz. Calling him wasn't ANY plan. It was my last shot at stopping myself. Literally.

Realize that there ARE people whose "social lives" are on the 'net. Mine is, as I'm disabled and virtually housebound. My main "connection" per se with other people is via YT and Stickam. Without these, I'd almost never have anyone to talk to.... there are MANY people in situations similar to mine, and therefore some of them would have nowhere to go BUT the 'net to get help.

Most who are truly suicidal wouldn't log on and make tons of posts/PMs/etc., but some do. Mind made up or not.
I planned my suicide once, when I was 20. Mind made up. Called my shrink, subconsciously knowing if I heard his voice I'd stop. He was unbiased: not close to me.
Often, real cries for help ARE sent to virtual strangers; they aren't close & therefore likely to be biased.

From what I have personally seen and experienced? Sadly yes... but the ones who do the most damage are the ones who are ill themselves and actually believe what they are doing is ok... It's sadly common and this is a great place for it. Just be aware and don't believe everything you hear. However... listen! SEE - that's my problem. Things quickly get convoluted.
Heidi, this was incredible. Powerful video. I've been in very similar situations and know that it is NO fun. For anyone to see things like this as gaming the system truly needs to have the police show up at their door a few times to help them put life in perspective. For the others, I can only hope that they will let the care and concern of others in, and get the help they need. I admire the raw way you addressed this. czarwright, a "medic" button would indeed be a grand idea. However, I'm certain there isn't someone sitting there 24/7 watching for flags of ANY type on vids. Is this real or rehearsed? Well said regardless. 5 stars! You know what is scary? The day (GOD FORBID) that someone creates a suicide pact and either on stickcam or on YT posts the final vid. That is a fear I have as a writer of fictional stories. YOU BRING the REAL to the forefront. U DID RIGHT!

there's some people that "tell the truth" when you have to remember that "just because you can, doesn't mean you should", and if you "can't say it nicely then don't say anything at all".
i intensely dislike people who feel that need to blurt out things when it's really quite rude, hurtful, and just plain infantile :/

The pills were in one hand as the other hand dialed.... I hung up several times before I finally spoke.
Why? Part of me wanted to reach out and get help. The other part of me didn't want to talk to anyone at all, because that part of me did NOT want to stop myself.
This was 17 yrs. ago, before the 'net was a common household entity. Had it been, I probably have contacted someone that way instead of my shrink. Not publicly though, it'd likely have been PM or email - again, no one "close" to me.

I get what you say RE: postings in the vast majority of situations. My correction/P.S. comment explains it more.
I was going to take 27 nitroglycerines. Instant heart attack, no time to revive. Wrote a LONG letter, the whole shabang. Trust me, I was truly suicidal. But that doesn't erase second thoughts.
I didn't know my shrink well yet. I was sent to him a couple months before. Had to dial 411 and all that jazz. Calling him wasn't ANY plan. It was my last shot at stopping myself. Literally.

P.S.
Realize that there ARE people whose "social lives" are on the 'net. Mine is, as I'm disabled and virtually housebound. My main "connection" per se with other people is via YT and Stickam. Without these, I'd almost never have anyone to talk to.... there are MANY people in situations similar to mine, and therefore some of them would have nowhere to go BUT the 'net to get help.
Just sayin'.... ;)

Most who are truly suicidal wouldn't log on and make tons of posts/PMs/etc., but some do. Mind made up or not.
I planned my suicide once, when I was 20. Mind made up. Called my shrink, subconsciously knowing if I heard his voice I'd stop. He was unbiased: not close to me.
Often, real cries for help ARE sent to virtual strangers; they aren't close & therefore likely to be biased.

I'm glad you were move by this and showed your true emotion Level. I'm sorry if i can't speak on that level so you can understand better but i will try because you have asked me too. the Advocate is here to help solve problems and this is a big problem on here and big then just the one time that she experienced it. by hearing what she has to say on it has helped alot of ppl in dealing with the same problems if they run in to warp ppl too.

..my problem is that you assume people already know what you are talking about when you vaguely mention various confusing details.

In brief... someone was threatening suicide and homicide. It was dealt with. I then talk about people who make things up / fake drama and how much emotional expense on people who are lying.

I was "on the homefront" in '90/91, and will be again in 12 days. So I know the situation quite well - it's very much a "personal hell" if you will.
I've been thinking of a "Support the Troops' Loved Ones" sort of campaign in hopes of those like me finding each other, but I don't have the sub/view base to really get it out there. :/

Heidi, I have a cam in brand-new condition used maybe 5x, it just sits here. (QuickCam Pro 9000; search on logitech-com)
Your friend could use it for YT vids and Stickam chat (if she wants to do either), as well as record videos & take photos of herself & kids to burn onto CD/DVD and snail mail to her husband. (They have computer access out there whenever possible, whether he has his own laptop w/him or not.)

Yes, an impact is exactly what I want to make. I'm so tired of the "supporting the troops is supporting the war" antics on YT, and really want to help those on the homefront find/support each other be it via YT, Stickam, IM, email - I personally find Stickam live chat helpful.

From what I have personally seen and experienced? Sadly yes... but the ones who do the most damage are the ones who are ill themselves and actually believe what they are doing is ok... It's sadly common and this is a great place for it. Just be aware and don't believe everything you hear. However... listen! SEE - that's my problem. Things quickly get convoluted.

Heidi, this was incredible. Powerful video. I've been in very similar situations and know that it is NO fun. For anyone to see things like this as gaming the system truly needs to have the police show up at their door a few times to help them put life in perspective. For the others, I can only hope that they will let the care and concern of others in, and get the help they need. I admire the raw way you addressed this. czarwright, a "medic" button would indeed be a grand idea. However, I'm certain there isn't someone sitting there 24/7 watching for flags of ANY type on vids. There's just not enough man-power in the way of employees and/or volunteers. Therefore, and sadly, any response to a "medic" button would most likely be too late. :(

Oh, I know that fear is a tremendous motivator. Fear sells from TV (political campaigns, documentaries, other shows, ads) to articles (newspapers, magazines, the 'net) to videos on YT & elsewhere.... it goes on and on.... and disgusts me to no end.
Drama sells just as much. Just look at the most viewed/subbed accounts here on YT - they're generally the drama channels. As in fake; "for the lulz" as well as views/subs.
Fighting fear/drama without actually fighting is the hard part, eh? :)
