@mrdojob Thanks for pointing that out. Most ammo under 22 is usually rimfire. There is even an occasion as to where a caliber above 22 can be rimfire as well.
When 20 grain FMJ or XTP are shot into A-36 steel a cup is formed and liquid lead acts as a force multiplier that strips the back end of the jacket from the projectile and send it back at the shooter with enough force to blind, cut finger tendons, plug-cut neck arteries and damage scope lenses. The fragment resembles a jagged hole saw, the circumference remains unbroken. Wear shooting glasses, face shield, hard hat, leather collar and thick leather gloves within 150 feet.
@TheRangeline I'd sure like to know more about the 1/4 steel you're shooting with the .17 HMR. Which projectile are you using and what is the official ASTM designation and condition of the steel?
