How do you btw heat treat them, is it just by warming them red hot on a flame and then rapidly cooling em by immersing them in oil? I think I've once tried it in school, not sure anymore though what I made.. but anyway it felt simple at least! Using water instead of oil might kinda destroy the steel tho :P
Good vid! Hmm...I think I may just build my own AK instead of order & pray with a WASR. Although Henderson Defense has "certified" ones where they make sure there's no B.S. canting in the sights or bad magazine lock up.
=] Now you have a ton of videos...A TON! Do you have any that actually show you putting one together from scratch? If not, you should definitely do it! To me, it seems a little harder than an AR build. I've only started looking into building an hour ago haha but bending a flat receiver, welding things etc. is stuff I wouldn't be able to do.
@GunWebsites Building an AK-47 or 74 is a weekend project if you have the proper tools, I've never spent more than 2 days building an AK. The longest was 3 days because I had to drill and form the under-folder holes on the back of one of my receivers because I had bought a Nodac Spud 100% receiver without the holes pre-drilled drilled (so that i could save some money), and making sure everything was drilled right and aligned took a good third day
yea? I've seen them put together in as little as 6 hours 12 at a time.. but we are not talking about pros, or even experienced home builders.. people without tools have a lot of stuff to buy and things to learn
could you recommend a good manufacturer for underfolder receivers? I.O. in n.c. has a receiver for around $50 but i dont know if they have one designed for an underfolder.
This might be off topic, but where can I buy a WOODEN handguard and furniture for my WASR-10/63 UF? Mine came with a PLASTIC pistol grip which looks and feels crappy. I keep on seeing wooden furniture sets, including the stock, but I have an underfolder.
Just bought another amd 65. Guys for the money you cant beat it. Quality Hungarian ak for under $500. Like in this video make sure you get a good reciever. Most of the amd 65's use the FEG reciever. Its as good or better than a russian built gun!
I'm pretty familiar with circuitry and i build amplifiers, so i'm good with any kind of directions. I also live in Arizona, so i know it's cool to legally do it.
I'm going with a stamped receiver just because they're cheap, so if i blow the build somehow i'n not out, just want to build a basic working gun before i start shelling money into builds. So overall, how easy is this compared to other builds?
As GW points out, it is a firearm. If you want to buy a receiver online and have it shipped, it must be delivered to a person holding a Federal Firearms License. He can then xfer it to you. Most FFL's charge a small fee--mine charges me $25 per delivery.
Excellent review. Always wondered about the differences. Contrary to your comments (and others), GOOD QUALITY receivers can be bent with a jig that takes about 3 hours to build for $15. I'm not going to debate the level of difficulty as that is subjective. I will say that anyone with the skill to build their own AK can certainly bend their own quality receiver! Saving $90 per AK is nothing to sniff at if you build more than one, and you don't need to involve an FLF to get it. Thanks again.
Better learn to heat treat them too then, need to get them back to the correct hardness after bending.. and are you going to spot weld your own rails?
Saving money is one thing.. saving a few dollars while sacrificing quality is not preferable IMO
@GunWebsites You simply ignored the fact that that thousands of guys bend their own QUALITY receivers. We sacrifice nothing in quality , and save a considerable amount of money. Heat treating the receiver pivots is simple, and there are plenty of rail options. The fact is that anyone who is skilled enough to build their own AK can also bend their own QUALITY receivers. Using your logic, you should not even build your own AK--just buy one punched out in a factory if you want quality? Nonsense.
bite me.. I am not going to get into a "I can build better AKs than you" fight with some unknown on the internet
Do WHATEVER you want I could care less, but I am NOT going to give advice to my viewers that is lame.. and yes bending your own receivers is lame.. you save FEW dollars.. big deal .. for a lesser quality part.. if you want to build like that great, but the rest of us that have the extra $60 you saved will be happy as can be with solid dependable receivers..
@GunWebsites Bite you? What are you, like twelve? You are a rather defensive individual for someone so "famous?" I didn't say I can build a better AK--I said anyone who has the skill to build their own AK can bend their own QUALITY receivers. That's a simple fact. Wether or not it is lame is just your opinion. Now take two deep breaths and make another great video. I appreciated the various differences you pointed out in receivers I have not yet used.
I am not famous, I am just not going to take crap off some unknown who claims home made "craft work" is the same quality as a well made professional heat treated spot welded receiver..
the fact that you can't even admit the fact that "real receivers" are better than your home brewed says a lot about your ability to see things rationally
Focus on my words all you want, but the message has remained the same.. hobby receivers are just that.
@GunWebsites I didn't give you any "crap", and made no such comparison to factory receivers. However, not all factory ones are well made--Pookie's website and others list the NUMEROUS defects in each. I point this out so you do not mislead others about “factory quality”. The boys at AK-builder would not see eye-to-eye with your assessment, nor would 555th, Grasshopper, etc. Unlike you and I, they are "knowns”. Your excellent AMD-65 review shows just how crappy a factory receiver can look.
@39483294jdw0 Guns exist, you can't change that. Better everyone have them so we are all on even footing rather than trust power in the hands of a privilieged few. Can you do a video or explain the difference between milled and stamped receivers? I am not sure what to go with milled or stamped. Is milled that much better? Why does milled cost so much more and what are some examples of milled and stamped? Are they interchangeable? I was thinking of going with an Arsenal milled receiver or the MLS99 by The Firing line company made in USA. What are your opinions and thoughts to each type and what is to be expected from each design.
I have both milled and stamped AK's. The difference in construction is that the milled AK's reciever is made from a solid block of forged steel then milled to form a reciever. Milled costs more because it's a much more expensive process that requires alot of maching and material waste. In terms of durability, the milled AK dosen't really hold anything over a stamped one, stamped recievers will last for many years of firing also, I've seen pictures of 60 year stamped AK's still holding up.
The reason I like milled over stamped is pretty much cosmetics. The machined reciever looks alot more attractive looking and furniture on the milled guns looks nicer and it looks classic. In terms of accuracy, milled and stamped are the same. The parts between stamped and milled AK's are pretty much 100% interchangable except the furniture.
I personally like the side folding AK the best. Also I agree with you on the fact that it is a better to just buy the entire receiver if you want to embark on the journey of building your own AK type rifle. Thanks for the wonderful videos.

no, well technically yes, anything is possible..but why would you want to though?.. as I explained the under folding receiver is very weak and has all those holes
so then i should just get a new receiver without the under folder then. i want to do this for the folllowing reasons: 1. the ak i am getting is for 300 bucks used of course, not bad and two i want to get the fab defense recoil buffer stock that comes for the ak 47 . thats why i ask if anything i can always get another ak with a non collapseble stock.

When I was going to build one I looked into the laws and I found that:
As soon as a flat is bent it because a firearm.
It is legal to possess an unregistered/non-serialed that you have made but you cannot sell it.
After finding that out and how hard it is to bend and make the receiver I just bought a registered one already made.
