I remember that my mother would not let me go swimming in a public pool. Everyone was so afraid of getting polio! Then the oral vaccine came out. We met at the elementary school and took a sugar cube with the liquid vaccine on it and let it dissolve in our mouth. Children with polio who were in "iron lungs" were shown on TV. It was just horrible to see them. My college rommate had polio in her arm when she was a child and so did my husband's uncle. We were lucky to have a vaccine.
