I would question whether a laser gun is sufficiently accurate against something that small, at such a low speed (even compared with a 1986 Escort speedometer).
I was told (at the time) that in a batch of RS-540 motors there could be a variation up up to 15% in power.
i see! than makes sense ;) those 540 motors were the motors that mabuchi and/or johnson offered tamiya for that specified time.... they were different from time to time and have been changed from 80's to 90's to today so you're right. the slowest was about only 15,000 rpm or so but the fastest like 18,000
Being slightly cynical, I think Tamiya wanted owners of their products to get cheesed off with the standard motor, and buy more expensive replacements.
I have a 2007 Lunchbox and it's still going strong on the stock motor. I was thinking of going back to the BMX track where I had so much fun with the original - but they've built houses on it.

first thing to go was the 540 motor! straight in with an 8.4v battery and decent motor - pretty quick then! spent most of its time up on the back end

About 16mph with the standard motor.

wrong! 20.5 km/h with standard motor, which is about 13 mph

When I had the original Lunchbox in 1988, I got my dad to pace it with his Ford Escort, and 16mph was our best guess as to the top speed.
Knowing a bit more about (real) cars now,. speedometers are normally about 10% optimistic, which might explain some of the discrepancy.

16 mph was a very good guess, since they have been lazer gunned at 13 ;)
