You all might not know about this, but here's what I think happened.

Firstly, I think that Griggs had his own M1911 because it seems highly unlikely that he could have scrounged one off the ground on the bridge.

Secondly, Griggs probably carried his M1911 with 7 in the mag and 1 in the chamber. That is possible and not at all unheard of.
