  • beautiful, hope i will be able to see Ernani in the cinema :)))) in February, tickets are already at home :)

  • i like this video very much:) he is born for singing Verdi:)

  • Maybe it' s just me, but we had Milnes who pretty much imitated Warren. & Now here we have Hvorostovsky imitating Bastianini:( Not a bad imitation @all. He really should sing the way he did when he won Cardiff's Singer of the world contest back in 89! There he sings much more open. It's got nothing 2 do w/him being older. Watch Bastianini's "live" performances her on Youtube & U'll C it's very similar 2 how Dmitri is singing. He's definitely channeling the man. 4 that, great job Dmitri:)

  • I love this guys voice..... and his looks! Wow. stunning.. Everthing is about right.. This is a very difficult aria.. the fact that he does not put an A natural at the end.. is really not to be held against.. him.. He is singing the score!

  • una bellissima sala, creata per la voce...

  • I guess when you're a "star", you don't have to pay attention to the note values!

  • Now everybody can hear and see the difference between the great ones (Bastianini, Mcneill, Protti, Merrill. Warren, Cappuccilli and others) and this one. This Tube is great!! you can see what is going on nowadays, and how great ones have done it in the past...For example those clips from Forza in Naples -58, Corelli and Bastianini seems like singing in playback, so easy, steady body and face posture. These guys are not in the same bussiness..unfortunately.

  • You're welcome. Go listen to the dead ones then, if you know better than us.

  • @frufruJ Dmitri said in an interview i have read that he admires Bastianini :-)

i don´t know why to insult H´s singing, he is great as well.

  • @Baritenore those were all voices with a good deal more weight.. and heft.( and I like that too). .. Dimitri hasa medium weight voice.. and as such is quite flexible and lyrical.. In other words.. while I admire the singers you mention... greatly.. I also like this dude... I see them as different.. not necessarily better/worse.

  • Has Hvorostovsky ever sung a high A??

  • Yes, many times, actually. On Heroes and Villains, there are several of them. After all, you can hear it in Valentin's aria at this very concert. More than that, I have a recording where he sings a Bb.

  • OK thanks. Just wondering. I had never heard him do so.

  • Really? He's pretty secure up there. He is even heard in some of those "cage matches" on YouTube.

If you don't have any of his operatic CDs (too baaaad! :-) ), try here on YT Figaro's & Valentine's arias, Il Prologo from I Pagliacci, I believe.... I can't remember all the performances where he sings a high A, can anybody help?

  • OK I'll check some of those out. I'm not really a fan of his but I guess he's one of the better current singers. :-)

  • :-)

Please remember it's not just about the high notes. I think he just owns Di provenza il mar, Rodrigo's death or Il Balen del suo sorriso, not to mention the Russian repertoire. Please check some of these out, too.

    My fav Barbiere: watch?v=KE9OWvBRyQ4

  • It's not just about the high notes, true, but aside from that I don't find the basic coloring of his voice to be too appealing. After listening to Macneil sing this beautifully and cap it with a booming A natural this is a wee bit disappointing ;-D

He's a good actor and of course, good at Russian.

  • I don't find his dark colour appealing in Rossini, either, when listening to him *after* a "regular" baritone. I love his Verdi, he was not a bad Don Giovanni, and I love his arie antiche.

    You asked for a high A... ;-)

  • I've seen DH in Rigoletto and Simon Boccanegra, and in concert. He is a superb baritone; others may be as good, but no current baritone is better. Solid technique - great Verdian line - and expressive. We are fortunate to have this artist appearing so widely in the states..

  • In this moment he is one the great verdian baritone! Bravo!

  • BOOO!!

  • what do you mean, "Boo?" explain!!can you sing like this??
