  • She's probably dead. Recorded in 1960 so she's over 50 years old.

  • Is she single?

  • @crimsonsunshine We are all going to get old and die it is enevitable, there is no rewind. You better start accepting it are you'r going to have sad hard life until you stop breathing.

  • Love the haunting, blues sound. If you like this song, then check out "Just Like a Bird Without a Feather" that Samuel L. Jackson sings in the movie Black Snake Moan.

  • My favorite version

  • Did she have any of her own songs?

  • the Animals were, due to censorship, made to change the narrator from the prostitute to a gambler.

Every misogynist should be made to hear this version, and to actually listen to the original lyrics; it might shock him out of his complacency for once in his damn life.

(I am not female, nor gay, nor effeminate; ergo, all such accusations as replies to this comment are "poisoning the well" arguments made, for the most part, by chauvinistic knuckle-draggers [but, again, only for the most part])

  • Of course, anyone who makes those kinds of ad hominem claims, is much too stupid to understand my original comment in the first place.

Consider this, for once, male sexists: 80%-95% of prostitution is controlled pimps, who are among the most callous of human beings. They acquire their "hos" via driving around and picking up naive, rebellious young girls (average age of entrance into prostitution: 14yo!), feigning love, and then exploiting the girls' naive emotional attachment, enslaving them.

  • when will youtube begin enforcing citations to ignorant members who destroy and spam the comments section with meaningless trivialities?

  • congratulations for this singer, from Chile. sorry for my english

  • how on earth could their possible be any dislikes? joan is my queen and has the voice of an angel.

  • Lol, HIGH FIVE, I'm also half Salvadoren.

  • amazing version. thanks for uploading! :)

  • how the hell do you dislike this?

  • I love this song. It reminds me of the abuse and addictions I've escaped, I used to be trapped there, even after it was years since I had been hurt, but some how I finally escaped it, Now when ever I listen to this song I feel filled with enough strenth to never return to that horrid place again.

  • une grande dame de la chanson......et une vraie militante ..

  • She is half Mexican, just saying.

  • @hellokitty4me I knew she was kinda mixed.

  • @shred305 Yeah, She kinda looks like my younger sister. She's half Mexican as well.

  • @hellokitty4me Are you hispanic aswell??

  • @shred305 I guess.

  • @hellokitty4me Me to!!! Hahaha alright cool!

  • @shred305 Awesome! Mexican?

  • @hellokitty4me I am cuba!! Whooo Hooo 4 Mexicans and Cubans!!!.....lol

  • @hellokitty4me and half scottish, just saying.

  • @batulefou Amen

  • @eaterHP ... it sounds like a gambling den/brother blues if u listen to The Animals but Dylan talks about the young girl. Anyway there are words that do not fit ... it has been a long time, but things like "wearing a ball and chain" and "ending life in rising sun"... in new Orleans. i may just do some research and get this stright in my mind :)

  • @nbx2au

It's a brothel, working the industry becomes a ball & chain...because you can never get it out of your system, the "easy" money is like drug addiction.

It becomes all the women know, & they become immune to the initial shame from doing it...they become numb, & just go with the flow after awhile.

By the time they've been in the industry a few years, they stop knowing anyone who isn't in the industry...or in some offshoot, that carries the same baggage & the same types hustling.

  • Beautiful!

  • I like her voice... but I'm not sure I like this rendition of the song. In my opinion, House of the Rising Sun can only be sung perfectly by, well, a black lady who lived the life the song is talking about. This is just a tad too sing songy, if you know what I mean. :)

  • мне нравится

  • Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and The Animals versions of this song are at least 10 times better than freakin Hailey Reinharts

  • very beautiful song !

  • It's amazing to me that people who don't know each other and are drawn to the same musical material can be hurling vile cursewords at each other, within hours. What makes you folks so angry?

  • its sad how music industry is today..all about clothing and showing off not about the singing and what the song means

  • I swear, I died for a bit when I heard this song.

  • @Wollenschrank well obviously you are the stupid cunt ;) try to find some singer today that always sings better live without that technical shit and all that charlatanism.

  • @Wollenschrank , u dickless 'tard

  • @Wollenschrank People like you disappoint me. You probably don't have any musical appreciation except for the music you like. Keep your mind open.

  • Duet, that's exactly what I was thinking.

  • god I wish her and Dylan did this song as a duet

  • We 60's chicks are still here and better than ever.

  • 1960, cannot blieve it, been listening to the various versions over the years and must say, this and the animals are still the best

  • I have seen Joan Baez perform twice at the Britt Pavilion, Jacksonville, Oregon (outdoors under the stars). Always enjoyed every minute of her shows.

  • Maravilloso !!!

  • where'd you get that last picture?

  • her voice is so sad., so beatiful.

    I love this song!!

  • Leave it to Eric burdon

  • Oh, what a voice! And a great song, too. I'm a metalhead as well as a classically trained pianist, and a child of the 80s but my parents brought me up listening to their music and I am SO grateful!

  • ummm...i'm fucking godsmacked...i didn't know there was a singer like this

  • FORSE MI SONO INNAMORATO DI JOAN BAEZ, CHE BELLA SEI MENTRE FUGGI DI CASA VERSO L'INFINITO...EPPURE NELLE INFINITE POSSIBILITA' TI HO AMATO...MENTRE FUGGIVI DI CASA VERSO L'ORIZZONTE INFINITO...LONTANO DALLA CASA DEL SOLE NASCENTE...EPPURE HO BACIATO LE TUE LABRA IN UNA NOTTE DI FUOCO E WHYSKIE...HO SPUTATO L'ANIMA E TU ME LA HAI RACCOLTA...L'HAI STRIZZATA COME UNO STRACCIO PER PULIRLA...CON UN PO' DI MIELE L'HO INGHIOTTITA DI NUOVO...ERANO MIELE CALDO LE TUE LABBRA...ORA LE LACRIME SONO PERLE..

  • classic song classic singing style love it thumbs up

  • 60 people are sloths

  • спасибо здорово!!!

  • showing images of joan ruins this video.. just close your eyes and hear the song out.. just listen

  • Wonderful song and video ;-) Thanks , my dear friend Eliane to sharing this video with me ;-)

  • A friend insisted I come over to her house to listen to this new singer. From the moment I heard Silver Dagger and what followed I was transfixed. I'd never heard a voice so pure, so penetrating, so perfect, so gentle. I searched out Folksingers 'Round Harvard Square which contain 5 or 6 songs that still are to me the purest of her recordings. I later attended some of her concerts where she was introducing this new guy, Bob Dylan, he was pretty good too.

  • This song requires a males voice.

  • sing it sista!!

  • although this is the original i personally prefer The Animals version

  • @CrimsonSunshine This is far from the original of this song. Silly little kids...

  • @greatestxgift awww look at the old person its gunna die soon so take your photos now b4 its gone

  • @CrimsonSunshine I'm far from old...I'm just not a complete moron like you who makes assumptions about a song being the original when you're completely ignorant to the origins of it.

  • @greatestxgift lol aww looks its using its brain on teh internetz so cute! ur right i dont know much about music but you wanna know why? because i dont have time to waste figuring out which song is the original. i just choose which version i like. if you dont like plz.. write me a comment.. print it out.. then shove it straight up your ass cause it'll be easier to read when im fucking you in the ass

  • @CrimsonSunshine Let me get this straight: You don't have time to find out who the original person is to record this song but you do have time to write comments about this being the original on a YouTube page? Also, I think you've also made it painfully clear that you like to fuck other men in the ass. I'm sorry but I'm not homosexual (not that there is anything wrong with that) so please go chase cock elsewhere.

  • @greatestxgift i just came

  • @greatestxgift btw how does that make me gay. just because i want to fuck a dude in the ass? i dont understand please explain

  • PRAWDZIWE, DELIKATNE, PIĘKNE! - Olek.

  • I love this song

I was in love when I heard first time

  • @dunjak111 hey this ain't no where as good as the 'original Troll!

  • @seker7

    What are you replying to?!

And what is the "original", since its known to be an old folk song. Or are you refering to "Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster", who recorded this one first?

  • damn Joan has such a clear and powerful voice, such a rare gift.. thanks

  • Goosebump!

  • It's my best favorite song, thanks Joan.

  • These are some really beautiful photos of Joan Baez.

  • Although I prefer the musical arrangement of the Animals' version, the lyrics and delivery of this one are so much deeper and poignant. It's telling of our culture that the story of a woman unwillingly trapped into prostitution has been superceded by the twagic tale of her poor, poor client.

  • @leptoceratops Good call.

  • @leptoceratops hmmm... i was under impression that it was a folk song, last words of a black girl awaiting execution. House of the rising sun is the jail house.

Animals turned into a gambling blues.

  • @nbx2au it has sort become commonly accepted that this song is a black song, but many claim it was an English song adapted in America. Either way it most commonly thought to be about a brothel

  • i think that this version.is nor remarkable.

  • Let's face it-- girls were hotter in the '60's-- I need a time machine....

  • @neckronn99 LOL no they weren't every white chick had no ass or tits. i think what you meant to say was girls were SMARTER in the 60's tho.. i'm not sure if that's true either

  • @CrimsonSunshine

Dude, I was there-- my 5th grade teacher would sit on the front edge of her desk to talk to the class in her mini-skirt and go-go boots. I paid attention, believe me.

Oh, and watching Goldie Hawn on Laugh-in, and praying my mother wouldn't come around the corner from the kitchen during the bikini-dance sequences. I miss that....

  • @neckronn99 not hotter. classier

  • @calebgrantier

Hmm, you might have me there...although I do remember a lot of hotness floating around.

BTW, this takes nothing away from Joan Baez as a singer-- this was a damn good cover of a great song.

  • @neckronn99 I need it too. Music was better...

  • @neckronn99 You got it, man- I want their natural hairs back ;)

  • Und ich dachte immer dieser Song wäre entweder von Dylan oder den Animals.

    Internet macht schlau.

  • hauntingly beautiful voice............. :)

  • WOW I'M 48 YEARS OLD IV'E ALWAYS LOVED 1960'S MUSIC MY WHOLE LIFE

I DRIVE MY WIFE NUTS TELLLING HER ABOUT EVERY OLD SONG THAT WE HEAR. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I EVER HEARD THIS MASTERPIECE

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS... ALAN

  • BIRTH OF THE GOAT

  • Just AMAZING. I remember this and I remember her so well. ^^ She is still the greatest. Thanks for posting this.

  • A voice that takes you a thousand miles...

  • Did she say the frase,a full of shit?

  • First time hearing her version, still like The Animals better for the harder feel. Still a great version here. Judas Priest also covered one of her songs.

  • @TheRockerchef Yeah !! Diamonds & Rust, On the Sin after Sin album 1977 !! And later released live album Unleashed in the East think that was 1978/79. and after that on live/compilations Albums. In fact they still play it in their Tours

  • @Hanzey666 Yes sir,I've seen Preist 5 times over the years. The version on Unleashed is awsome...so freaking good.

  • my fav song and i love joan baez... :)

  • Ta bonito pero prefiero la versión de animals...

  • @patatu99 yo tambien amigo =)

  • Joan is a VERY tough act to follow here....Eric Burdon had guts!!!

  • 48 tone deaf people out there, sad that they can't enjoy perfect pitch music like Joan Baez's beautiful voice ;)

  • i know theres great versions of this song., but not with a voice like this!! she makes this song sound more like woodstock era, rather than a whorehouse... tommy.

  • @tommieparch Check out the version by Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers backed by Fred Hellerman and Eric Darling on guitars and you'll hear another great voice. I've always regretted that Mary Travers never chose to record this song.

  • jesus she can sing

  • great voice forgot how good she isi've watched 10 versions of this song tonight Leadbelly , Animals ,Bon Jovi ,Frigjid pink ,Cool'O'Keefe' Sinead O'Connor' Dolly Parton'GeraldBoyClassical' Nina Simone' Joan Baez

  • When we wake up to the truth of life, inspired music like this will emerge and flourish again, and all the uninspired crap that people call "music" these days will fade away and be forgotten. Search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says to learn the truth of life.

  • @DemianHermann Don't mean to be rude, but that site was quite uninspiring to say the least. When you take a step back, and realize you are alone in the vastness of the cosmos, then you can truly appreciate that your time here on earth was but a second in the face of time and you at least got one good look at it. Appreciate your life, because many didn't get to live theirs.

  • I first heard it with The Animals so thats the one that sets the bar for me, don't mean the others aren't good

  • Bloody awful!

  • Joan Baez' voice is the purest and most thrilling I have ever heard in 'popular' music. Easily operatic if she had wanted. This is so moving, pins should not drop anywhere when she sings. 65 years I've been around and my nerve endings still tingle when I hear her.

  • this is my year :)

  • me encanta la voz de Joan pero para esta cancio y en UNA OPINION MUY PERSONAL la version de BTO es mejor

  • Epic rap battles of history

  • sono incantata da questa voce

  • thank you for uploading and telling the year, I like this way.

  • joan Baez was one of my first teachers after I feel that I was wakin g up from the propaganda! Period! Next up after Dylan is Aretha and so many more! I love this song. Donovan: Look up "Universal Soldier" and by Dylan an original "Ballad Of Hollis Brown". Peace

  • @Jane102248 Universal Soldier was by Buffy St. Marie

  • who the fuck can dislike this? bastards

  • I can still remember the first time I heard this in the Navy Newport Library on a Tues nite listening to records in the library and there were some earphones and I put them on and The House of the Rising Sun was playing. Never had I heard a voice such as this. I was in love. It was the beginning of Feb 1962. And she still is the greatest!

  • voice from the past.. beats ladygagas and britneys 100-0

  • Haley Rynehart of American Idol did a pretty decent version as well. But no, she didn't deserve to win it all.

  • {{{shivers}}} indeed.

Ms. Baez's voice is so pure.

(This song >was< written from a woman's point of view.)

  • I absolutely love this song. I have been to New Orleans many times that every time I hear this song I want to go back there.

  • No, angels would sound like eric burdon, if they were singing this song.

Having said that I've been a fan of Joan Baez since I was a young hippie in the 60's.

  • OMG.. shivers

  • If an angel could sing this is what she would sound like..

  • I miss this song.. when i was a lil girl.. this was my moms tunes... God Bless my mom... I wish she was still around... PS i love her voice...

  • this is amazing !

  • haley sang it on American Idol amazingly!!!!

  • wow wow wow I always forget just how good Joan is

  • I see Lady Gaga logged on under 43 user names to hit dislike. (i know i know i hate those people comments too but i just couldn't resist)

  • God, what a woman!

  • amazing.

  • For beardigady---

The best I have found in research is that the song was written in the 1820's. It was wrottem frp, a man's point of view, who had frequented "houses of ill repute". The "ball and chain" was syphilis, incurable and deadly in that period. The writer was going home to die. (young)

  • @duffiedawg From what I understand, this song can describe many situations. Some people think the house of the rise sun is a hospital for the curing of syphilis, as you said, making the song from the persepctive of a prostitute; others think it is a slave prison and the ball and chain is literal; while others go a step further and say that the narrator of the song killed her abusive father and was sent to prison for it.

  • The Tune is Very Old The Animals heard Dylan do it when he was on tour and recorded their version

  • @Jay902017 Eric learned it from Joan's landmark 1st lp, just as Robert Plant learned "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" from her landmark 3rd lp, "JOAN BAEZ IN CONCERT." Jackson Browne and Janis Ian both said they learned to play guitar by copying her playing on the landmark 2nd Baez lp, "JOAN BAEZ VOL2."

  • @taddyd1 Burdon learned it from Dylan's 1st album, which was in Am, just like Van Ronk had arranged it.

  • Joan can pussify any song. This song would be a unknown if it werent for The Animals

  • This song was not made in 1933, but it was most liekly made in the early 1800's, from a man moving west who lost most of his money. No one know who wrote the song, but it deffeintly was NOT written in the 1900's.

  • Good song but not my favourite version.

  • The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster and was made in 1933.

  • IMHO, this is the best!

  • Chords are, Em,G,A,C,b7 also the guitar is tuned down to Eb

  • beautiful guitar playing & singing. thanks.

    Amadea Leonore:)

  • One of the ultimate musical historians of the unsettling sixties.............a heroine for the tumult of a sexy new age she dove into to..............she earned the right to cover any of musical comments of this era

  • One of the ultimate musical historians of the unsettling sixties.............a heroine for the tumult of a sexy new age she dove into to..............

  • Great Joan Baez....beautiful voice...

  • Just got back from NOLA. Didn't find the house, but I did learn how to get into bar/clubs while underage.

  • Second best version of this song after the Animals

  • Anyone know the chords? All I can get is the Animals version...

  • What a great rendition and a distict voice!

  • Very good version, excellent singer

  • Fuck off with this political correctness, BLOODY FEMINIST SHIT!!

I though she was more intelligent than that!!

    ed

    w w w eddy nu

  • @onlinelondon What are you talking about?

  • Her voice sounds like cupcakes

  • @ch33s3ypwnr cupcakes??!! plz explain...

  • I heard this song and now I think, I can die in peace. Magic !

  • @MrsKellus

    Sweet ;-)

  • @MrsKellus

My friend, you are sweet 16!! But you are right: If you were old enough you could die in peace. in maybe and hopefully 90 years ;-)) because to know and to listen to joan baez it might make it easier

  • I just did a cover of this song. It's not as awesome as here. Ah well, I guess we can't all be the Great Joan Baez. You know, because she's a goddess.

  • Dios, es increíble esta bella voz. Amo profundamente a esta mujer, que no camina, sino que se desliza sobre el piso. Vuela sobre los árboles, las colinas, y sobre todas las cosas materiales.

  • This was originally a Ledbetter song right? (Leadbelly)
