For my sins I play the piano. My piano teacher couldn't cover what I tried to learn from listening to this legend of the keyboards. The man deserves far more recognition than he gets. My favourite is the little riff he puts in at the end of 'Street Fighting Man' by the Rolling Stones. Simple maybe, but then true genius is, more often than not!
@Is1959 Ditto on "Loving Cup." There were three pianists who are all gone now but who did great work for the Stones over the years: Ian Stewart (an original member of the band), Billy Preston, and (of course) Nicky Hopkins.
I'm a huge Stones fan. My favorite Nicky Hopkins contribution to Stones music was on the great but not so well known tune off of Exile on Main Street, Loving Cup.
I liked Jamming with Edward It hurts me too, and Blues Deluxe with Jeff Beck as well. I believe he toured with the Stones in '72 on the Exile tour. I could be mistaken.
Nicky Hopkins is one of the greats. He played with many great bands. I shared this album in college. I especially loved this song. Thanks so much for posting this!
Genius. The fact so many groups (Stone, Who, Kinks etc) utilized him speaks volumes to the talent he was. Definitely should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (problem is the people who run it appear to be clueless to what Rock and Roll is)
yes he should be in the hall , he played with 'everyone' ending his days with his friend john cipolina , i love them both , you can hear thier friendship in the later music of quicksilver messenger service
there used to be an Album called "Rare Tracks" and on that was a Nicky Hopkins number called "Whistling Piano" (I think) I have tried for years to get hold of it. (unsuccessfully) :O(
Dang! I wish I could hear that again. It was a Doozie.
:o) Cool, gosh it is going back a bit, eh? The other tune I recall from that particular time was Bacarat 'yes sir I can boogie' might pinpoint the year. Rare records stores had no joy with this. I shall also search for Mr Perfect. Thankyou for posting. nice one.
@borlani The name of the song is Mister Pleasant by Nicky Hopkins & The Whistling Piano. In that vinyl also appear:
The Soft Machine, Cream, Kevin Godley, Fairport Convention, Linda Lewis, Jethro Toe, The High Numbers, Jack Bruce, Stu Brown & Bluesology, John's Children, Sly And The Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Alex Harvey And His Soul Band.
I'm pretty sure you will recognize some of those names.
Thanks so much for posting this great song by this piano (unknown) legend. They don't get any better than Nicky. Check out his playing with the Jerry Garcia Band on Wolfgang's Vault. This quiet guy's hands made some of the prettiest piano sounds ever recorded.

I've got this very rare CD, it's incredibly beautiful, I think Hopkins should have had a much greater solo career. He's sadly missed.

Waiting for・・・"Rare Tracks" ?
graziemillione 3 years ago
oh that takes me back a bit. My memory (not good) was that the album was called Rock Legends - Rare Tracks.
Think the track you mean was Mr Perfect by Nicky Hopkins and The Whistling Pianos (I assume a one-off session band)
Damn it now I will have to try to track it down again
