You can hear this very bit part of background music in Zork Nemesis too in the third act of Quest for Copper right after you finish the very last puzzle in Crystal laboratory:

There is a scene with solar eclipse and you actually hear this part of the soundtrack as here in ZGI...
The game would be boring without machinery technology.
In my point of view I think "The Great Underground Empire" used machinery to actually show that the tyranny ruled by the Grand Inquistor (Eric Avari) can easily be defeated by the machine technology they used themselves ;-)
