  • Everybody walked out of the movie theatre when the classic Jupiter 1 saucer disc broke up in space and revealed the piece of crap new Jupiter 2.

  • @0:40 - "Roger Houston, and the monkey flips the switch." ... classic line.

  • Major West is a whiney bitch. Just saying.

  • One of the most technically retarded scenes in any modern Sci Fi movie. A good thing the rest of the movie wasn't this bad, or it would have been an awful movie instead of a mediocre one.

  • Did they think the audience was going to think "WOW! What a spectacular ship!" when the Jupiter I broke away and revealed the Jupiter 2? It looks like a metal Crossandwich!

  • They played this for nostalgia. There's no need for the ship to have a protective shield for liftoff if it was designed to routinely land and take off from other planets. I still don't understand why they felt they had to launch the thing from the top of a skyscraper. They could have launched it from an airport runway.

  • @nozcr - They made this superfluous " shield / shell " just so it would look like the original Jupiter II. Nostalgia indeed. The tower seems to have been inspired by " Contact ", maybe.

One of the few things that the movie had in common with the series was Dr. Smith. In the pilot, he was a stone - cold - blooded killer ( Unusual for a family friendly kid show ) who supposedly snapped a guy's neck before sneaking aboard the Jupiter II.

  • i have to agree with you cnote4461...I WAS ALSO PISSED THAT THEY WERE CALLING IT...JUPITER 1....LOVE THIS SCENE AND THE HYPER DRIVE, ALSO WHEN THEY FIRST CONFRONT THE SPIDERS DR. SMITH SAYS...'' TRUST ME MAJOR, EVIL KNOWS EVIL''...JUST GREAT....ANYONE ELSE NOTICE A RESEMBLANCE OF THE SPIDER SHIP IN THIS MOVIE TO THE ''SAME'' SHIP IN EVENT HORIZON????....LOOKS A LOT A LIKE TO ME ANYWAY.

  • The best scene was right before this part that showed the supports for the ship, opening up to allow the ship to launch.

The way they presented it and the music that went with it was awesome.

I keep looking on youtube for that earlier part but it seems I am the only one who thought it was the better, scene.

  • Hmmm. 2058. A hyperdrive engine has been invented but they still use exploding liquid fuel?

  • @warnation101 Repeat after me: "DRAMATIC REVEAL", or an OMG moment. Sheesh.

  • @UncleDeluxe Okay okay. Sheesh.

  • The movie should have been better. It had potential.

  • This is the only remake that I seen that had most of the original cast in it. It would have been cool to see Jonathan Harris in it. It also would have been nice to see the original Jupiter design instead of it having to break away to see the curved version of the new ship.

  • Couldn't they just have launched the rocket in space? Would save fuel :)

  • Interesting, in the first version the Jupiter 2 does have a magnetic propulsion...

    Back in time

  • I will never forget when I saw this in the theater - I was ll hyped when I saw the saucer take off....THEN - THE SHELL BROKE AWAY TO REVEAL THAT UGLY ASS BLOB OF A SPACE SHIP !!!! TOTALLY RUINED THE MOVIE FOR ME FROM THEN ON OUT!!

  • @cnote4461 As if! That was one of the most impressive parts of the entire movie, when the whole thing burst open to release the Jupiter 2. Sad you let such a small detail ruin a fantastic movie though...

  • @ADEdge Indeed - it was ONE - of the best parts. Still - critics said the new ship design was a disappointment, the plot was a bomb, and they didn't have enough adventures as the original family did. When the saucer shell broke away - that thing looked like a giant flying prune or a flying turd with rockets. Noooo thanks man. lol

  • @cnote4461 agreed. this and the hyper drive scene was all I really liked. Had some

of the sounds from the TV show but very few.

  • Who are those separatist bad guys?Arabs I hope.

  • "And the monkey throws the switch..." Ha! Now I will critique this scene: The ship was a flying hamburger. Jupiter-1 should have been the outter shell & J-2 should've been like the original saucer-shape. However, I like movie-J-2's outter feature details. Rear rockets are acceptible(as are the landing gear). I definately like the tranforming/lightspeed sections extending from the ship. The inside 'dash' controls were too weird. As for 'Robot', too far from the cool original. Yay! Dick Tuefeild!

  • ridiculous looking ship! .. long live the original Jupiter 2!

  • @727100bear actually like the new one. More cooler. Flying saucers are soo 1950's :D

  • That bald guy was the worst casting - he doesn't look like he'd be directing launches - he looks more like someone on american chopper

  • Who was that big guy with the shaved head and why was his voice dubbed?

  • Maybe its just me, but I think the Model-Based Special Effects of this Film have aged much better than the Computer-Generated ones.

  • Having just watched this movie today, there were many good things i enjoyed, but, it would have been nice to have the fusion core lights on this version as well, call it old school or whatever, still would have been a nice touch

  • I'm really sick of coming on this site and reading the ramblings of these PATHETIC old farts that live in the past and have no hope for the future. Get a life, you losers ! OK, maybe that came out a little insensitive, and the "politically correct" thing might be to remain silent and respect the elderly, but respect has to be earned.

  • @dhucke4assembly dude i am 19 but all the same fuck you and fuck off

  • @1479242009 Yes, you are one of the pathetic LOSERS that I spoke of.

  • @dhucke4assembly how so? that i wwant to leave the planet filled with moronic marxist idiots??? that i would to live beyond the bullshit of the human race..you and people like you hold this nation back...do us a favor stick your nuts in our garbage disposal

  • @1479242009 Are you satan himself ?

  • @dhucke4assembly now...... just a person that know what works and what does not.....morons like you in power are waht kepts this nation in the hellish state is has been for the last 110 years....if you dont like it and the people in it leave...knowledge+science+inspiration=a better tomorrow

what do your bring to the table?

  • @1479242009 You just answered my question - you are satan.

  • @dhucke4assembly how is that a come back? you sir a a idiot...

  • @dhucke4assembly Would like to ask you a question. Were you aware that a good comic book series about the Robinson’s existed long before L.I.S. look up Space Family Robinson on google. See links there. Making that comic series into a movie or series would be a great new concept. Different ship, crew, and concept. Talk to me!

  • @templerman Thanks, I didn't know that.

  • @dhucke4assembly What made the original series so great were the stories. Great actors too! At least for a sci-fi serial... The chemistry between Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelly was incredible! Those guys were like the "power-trio" of television for sure. Of course actors back then were nearly 100% stage-trained, which helps to bring a hint of realism to any production. William Shatner used his body as much as his mouth!

The unsung hero here is Jeffery Hunter. HE WAS THE BEST CAPTAIN EVER!

    RIP

  • I would love to see a movie combining my 3 favorite sci fi TV series: "Lost in Space" meets "Six Million Dollar Man" meets "Incredible Hulk"

  • It's just like the phasers, communicators, and tricorders on the newer Star Trek movies... Why the fuck don't they just use the original props?

  • @AlembicVapor

Because most of the original props are unavailable - and they really show their age. There is a reason why both Enterprise and the newest Star Trek movie went out of their way to modernize TOS-era sets rather than replicate them. Sure, they looked cutting-edge in the 1960s, but now, they look kind of silly (unless you are going for the deliberate retro feel).

The worst part is that I know that I will live to see the day when Battlestar Galactica sets will look silly and dated

  • @Strannik01 Reproductions of the original designs would be much cooler looking than what they used on the re-boot movie IMO.

It's all about marketing if you ask me. Newly designed accoutrements equate to more dollars at the Wal-Mart cash-register!

    God bless America...

  • @AlembicVapor

Marketing probably had something to with that, yeah. As far as the original designs being cooler - I respectfully disagree. But hey, your millage may vary and all that.

  • The Beginning, the first episode of the TV series Lost in Space was way cooler.

  • I'd like to see this segment done with John Williams' music from the original TV series!

  • I use this as a demo scene for the surround sound/ Sub Whoofer....Awsome.

  • This Lost in Space movie had a lot of potential but went down hill when the movie makers screwed it up by changing the Jupiter 2. The original Jupiter 2 was MUCH cooler. I agree with you captheo1. The original Jupiter 2 and an atomic powered anti-gravity drive system fueled by deutronium. Why go back to 1950's technology?

  • This is actually the only part of the movie that pisses me off! The whole point of having the drive system they had was so that they WOULDN'T have to use rockets to launch it! 30 years after the original and they go backward technologically. Why not have the new Enterprise rocket propelled?

  • they need to make a sequel

  • For all the critics that hate this movie, look at it this way. Hollywood did their best to interest BOTH generations of LIS. Original fans and new ones, you know that the purchasing of the original series DVD's and VHS's at the time doubled. Probably because everyone wanted to know what the original was like before Hollywood got to making this movie.

  • When humanity first began space travel. LONG before we established first contact with the Turians at that one Mass Relay.

  • What's with the BS rocket technology, apparently the modern propulsion systems that are used in the real world are too smooth and quiet for Hollywood, they prefer lots of noise, flames and smoke.

  • @felixq78 See the backstory about the New Global Sedition the West was fighting. The saucer shell was obviously built only to conceal the "real" (long-range) ship from remote surveillance by the Sedition; the rockets, too, maybe were meant to hide Jupiter's real power/capabilities/form factor until she was out of their reach and on her way. Also, Earth bureaucrats prob. insisted on using the most-proven propulsion means as a means of risk reduction in the key, earliest stage of the mission.

  • It would have been cool to see the old outer design with the sleek interior throughout the movie. It looked a little like the "Spindrift" from Land of the Giants.

  • 2:02 thats joey from friends

  • @Megaman053 Yes it is and Courtney Cox is still Sexy.

  • Why did they change the Jupiter 2?

The Jupiter 2 was an iconic space ship. It was like the USS Enterprise or the Millenium Falcon in that it was instantly recognisable ... even to people who weren't fans of the series.

So what do they do ... they change it.

  • This film was so good and so bad, all at the same time. It's a film I love and hate.

  • When this sequence was shown in theatres, the audience cheered when the sleek and familiar saucer shape (and sound) of Jupiter lauched. Then 30 seconds they groaned when it turned into this funky ellipsoid blob. I agree with one movie critic, who at the time of the movie's release said that it was as if the producers and writers had never really watched a single episode of the orignal LIS.

  • @frantic1971 Well, they must have heard something about it, combining (in a very loose-type fashion) the 4 episodes "Reluctant Stowaway", "The Derelict", "Island in the Sky", and "There Were Giants in the Earth". I thought the movie was poorly done and didn't do justice to the show, but I did like the time travel concept in the movie, and some of the special effects had their moments (as a huge LIS fan, I'm trying to find some redeeming qualities about the film, but you have to dig deep).

  • Houston applied the saucer-like outer shell to conceal as many details as possible about the real ship from the enemy coalition that is bent on copying, then destroying it. i hadn't thought about re-using the steel for the Hypergate, good idea. But even if so of it re-enters, they don't care so much b/c the Robinsons' mission is basically EARTH'S LAST F-ING CHANCE TO SURVIVE. What's .0005% more environmental degradation when you're already gonna die in 20 years? Good movie, little confusing.

  • What we need is an exact remake of the 1960s series into a feature length movie using todays modern film making technology . And the same goes for War of the worlds.

  • @Chopper894 yeah but only slightly updared

  • @Chopper894 AMEN...you are so so right. I don't know why when Hollywood "remakes" an old move or TV show

they have to "modernize" it. If it was good in the old days and they thought people would like it why change things??

  • @nr1osfan They bank on the name recognition, not the content.

  • @Chopper894 Ummm... Spielberg remade War of the Waorls in '05.

  • @Chopper894 Shit you'll never get to see true remakes. Hell, in the end, I wouldn't want it. The originals are good as they are. Just because ILM didn't exist in the 60's, doesn't mean we need them in every film to make it perfect. I find the classics much more enjoyable, the acting is better.

  • @Chopper894 what about the old H.G.wells film first men in the moon

  • I agree with you forthnoxguy. I actually would have done the opposite. If they felt they had to use a launcher at all I would have use the laucher to break apart at takeoff to reveal the familiar Jupiter 2 inside. I waited a long time for this movie to come out and I was dissapointed with it. Too many changes.

  • AAAAGH so much trash (debris) after the core ship jetisoning!!! They will swim in pieces of metal pipes instead of the free space in a few years :-) Fortunately, it looks like they were not on stable orbit... it will faaaaall baaaaaack down.

  • @Cizurator

i bet you they use that stuff for that hyper gate thing they are building.

  • At this trajectory it will fall back into atmosphere in a few minutes. There's a question of the speed of the debris... it can also float to free space...

  • It burns up in the atmosphere, don't you know!

  • It depends on speed and trajectory of the debris. If it is enough fast, (i think it's called the 2nd space speed) it will go into free space. If it has too low speed, it will fall back and burn up.

Although movies like this are beautiful, they don't show the real physics of the space. Apollo 13 is an example of a realistic movie physics...

  • jjaja i really liked this movie.

and joey from friends is on it!

  • i always said, "no do-overs," as a kid...but, LIS deserves better...wish some producer would do this over!...the movie for this landmark show needs a DO-OVER!

  • Most of the problem with remakes is the people who produce this stuff weren't fans of the original.

  • I'm in agreement with all you guys, too many remakes get stuffed up by trying to overdo it.....if it aint broken you don't need to fix it

  • I thought the remake movie was very good, except for one thing. They changed the original Jupiter on the outside too much. Would have been ok to update the interior though. This new launch is stupid. I'm teased with the original look, then disappointed when the panels blow off. Why all that crap just to lift off when its capable of lifing off on its own and warp drive to. Wasted energy, wind resistance, space junk and so on. Really dumb, but I liked the rest. The new robot was wicked bad ass.

  • They should have kept the Jupiter 2 looking like the Jupiter 1.

  • I'm a genuine old fart who was 8 years old when LIS premiered in 1965. I LOVED the movie as it was a great retelling of the story taking full advantage of all the SFX that 1998 had to offer. The people that hate the film were expecting Dr. Smith complaining & acting like a buffoon. The 1st 5 episodes of LIS are full of drama & action. Not "Oh the pain." So, this was a good, entertaining film. And I like the new Jupiter 2. It's just plain fun.

  • @TR1Guy You have my sympathy.

  • You know, I have to agree w/ the "old farts". I was a child of 12 in the late 80's early 90's when the USA network started rerunning the original LIS. I freakin' LOVED the original series. I remember watching the pilot episode & thought the launch of the JupII was one of the coolest things I had ever seen on TV. The way it had that erie glow & the sounds as it lifted off the launch pad w/ no flames shooting out the bottom. We finally had a flying sauce of our own. The movie was a disappointment.

  • When I was in the theatre, the audience cheered when Irwin Allen's dramatic and well-loved Jupiter II design took off. It rises majestically in the air and then 10 seconds later explodes to reveal: a wierd ellipsoid blob. You should have heard the audience groan! A great story premise, a large and eager fan base, and the makers of this film still managed to f*ckit up. I agree with the Time magazine review: they said it's like the makers of this film never watched an episode of the original.

  • While the launch was impressive, aerodynamically it would have been fuel prohibitive. Talk about drag! They could have done a better job of keeping the redesign closer but there wasn't really much to work with. I grew up in the 60's watching the original and always was amazed at the disparity between apparent deck space of the model and the sets. Where in the heck did they store that little lander or have room for all the crew rooms? The miracle of suspension of disbelief.

  • I lol'd

I like the movie better than the show, but that's probably because I was born in the 90's.

  • As a kid who grew up in the 90's watching the entire series on cassette; I thought this movie was underrated. Point granted that to some, this movie doesn't meet their standards, but I liked this movie.

And the scene where the Jupiter 1 stage is explosively ejected, revealing the Jupiter 2 reminded me of the phoenix, reborn from the ashes of its former self.

    Just my five cents worth.

  • Close your eyes and imagine for one minute that you're 10 again and the only starships you've ever seen in your whole life are the Jupiter 2 and the Enterprise. No Star Wars, no Galactica, no Next Generation, not even Futurama, nothing, zip, cero!. Now, 30 years later, would you like to see the Jupiter 2 to look like a reborn phoenix? To make this movie without the Jupiter was the stupidest idea ever.

  • UP IS GO, ON YOUR COMMAND.......

  • It doesnt show much respect to the old series I dont particularly care for it when I first looked at it I thought wow a pilot for the old series then the explosion and at that point I almost stopped watching it ... just like Star Trek everyone wanted the old series but they had to do what they always do something untried and then 10 years of Genorations the new movie is a step in the right direction however ...... no one likes new stuff on a oem series ...

  • I loved this movie...

I've found the majority of people that thought it sucked were old farts that grew up with the TV series.. They need to quit living in the past.

I grew up watching StarTrek, but didn't outright reject the new movie that "rebooted" the franchise because it was different. In fact I liked it despite it's numerous cannonical errors and stupid moves..

Nostalgic obsessive nerds ruin everyone elses fun..

  • You are right, becoming a "nostalgic old fart" is the worst thing ever. I truly hope you die in your 30's so you won't have to become one. Moron!

  • *Ahem* Well I'm an "old fart" that grew up watching the TV series and I loved the movie. Sure, it went against everything in the show and violated every law of physics. But it was inventive, creative and mostly lots of fun. Don't group all of us old farts together. We don't all suffer from the same type of constipation.

  • I loved every second of the series and the movie was a delight. I too am an old fart. You can't go back, might as well go forward. I realize that as a fan of the original I'm in the minority when I say the movie was a fine attempt, but I believe it was.

  • i grew up with LIS...the movie was dismal...the launch was the only kool thing, until JUP1 made way for some JUP2 update...in the theater, everyone was cheering during the takeoff...then you could hear the letdown, after JUP2 emerged & the lame movie continued...this could have been a great movie...it reminds me of the poseidon adventure remake...the first was awful...the second, w/k russell was much better...maybe a dir/prod will try another remake of LIS...it deserves another chance...

  • I can see why this movie flopped. I am a big LIS fan, but didn't see the movie until I watched about 5 minutes of it when it came out on cable. I agree with what Roger Ebert had to say about the LIS movie. He said it was as if the producers had never even watched an episode of the original tv series. All Hollywood wants to do is make a quick buck off of nostalgia for these old shows. They seem unable to realize WHAT it was in these classic tv shows that MADE THEM CLASSICS!

  • @eddums I always love reading these quaint posts by Gen X microcephalics that are unable to make a point without injecting profanity or expressing some completely idiotic statement. I never thought that a movie is better than a book because a book "takes 100 times longer." Astonishing! Eddums, have you ever even read a book? Oh, I forgot, your dumbed down generation can barely read, or even speak for that matter. But you can text like banshees! Just some thoughts from a crusty old baby boomer

  • I enjoyed this movie until they crash on the planet and it turns into an episode of the tv show. It just slows down too much at that point.

  • the fllight deck and freezing tubes were cool but they should have left the the design of the ship alone.... they could have tweeked it a little and gave it a better ending so a sequal could have came up ......also this john robinson sucked he was never a whimp. as for don matt leblance was dead on.

  • It wasn't a great movie overall.. the begining was great with the space battle and the futuristic earth (though a bit tooo futuristic for only 50/60 years from now..) was good to see. Just helped start the story off nicely rather than jump straight into the ship about to take off and there being no backstory/build up. After that thought, went rather down hill and the ending was dire.. ok weve got off the planet, lets do a random hyperjump.. tadaaa.. the end! the lack of sequal was a big shame :(

  • The part of the launch was good.. but overall I think this version of the Lost in Space SUCKED

  • The movie had some good parts however they changed too much of the fundamentals that made the tv show so endearing. Example, the strong family bond and Pro. Robinson being a strong leader. He's a wimp in the movie. What a shame. So much is lost.

  • Honestly, it would have been MUCH cooler to have the Jupiter II look like the Jupiter I (that broke apart). It looked like an updated version of the original ship from the series, and then it was gone!

  • Agreed! When I saw it in the theatre, I got a real thrill seeing the Jupiter II from the original series with such power and life to it! The audience cheered when they saw it. Then a little later it "explodes" and we get this art-deco "ship" and everyone in the theatre groaned.

  • my fav part "and the monkey flips the switch"

  • I remember when this came out. As a kid I had never seen the original series ( I was a Star Trek kid) I loved the film. I still don't quite see why this film is so hated. Its not that bad. I think the ending is a little weak, but over all it provides some quality entertainment, good humor, fun characters. It's a shame the franchise didnt get a big boost out of this and a series of films made following these characters, hopefully ending with them returning home.

  • Just what happens to all those pieces of shell? Seems a silly and dangerous way to launch a ship.

  • The same thing that happens to the boosters on the shuttle. They splash down into the ocean and are collected for reuse later.

Mission Control does the math before launching a ship. I imagine the same thing would be done here.

  • it to protect the ship

  • The new movie was ok, but I sure wanted to see the ORIGINAL CAST come home! Now it's too late! We've lost 2 key actors! Too bad they didn't make the original cast movie when they had the chance!

  • This movie was stupid, what they should have done is a movie where they finally find earth and return home only to discover the planet is rules by......... apes.

  • AHAHA

  • i think that already did that

  • The ship looked better when it kept the outer shell when it was launched. I thought the new design sucked.

  • I like how the Jupiter 1 shell kept in tradition of the television show.
