Homosexuality should not be a gay rights issue, it should be a matter of equality. We are all humans and deserve the same respect no matter the sexual appeal, race, gender, social class, or anything else.
Leading groups who may share your views, like Exodus International, have responded to these studies by changing their approach. Once previously stated, they argued to not sacrifice the natural for what is unnatural (from the bible). Now they argue that genes should not define who you are (Exodus website). In the end, I think we need to open more dialogues, and do more research.
Great studies have recently been done on this, showing similar antagonistic selection in other species, as well as our own. We can easily measure someone's fertility, and have found that mother's of gay males are much more fertile than those of heterosexuals.

A genetic gene doesn't always show up. It depends on if it's dominent or resecive. Example your eye color. Your father could have blue, and your mother green. You could have green due to have that trait stronger in you. Also do you choose if your left/right handed? Your skin color? Your eye color? Which are all genetic. And did you choose to be straight? If you did, then why don't you decide to love a man even if it's just for a day. Can you do that? Have a relationship with one?

The way that peoples sexuality is determined is by multiple alleles, and different combinations bring out different things, like orientation. sexuality is as much a choice as eye color, which is determined in the same way. evolution explains why we have ears and walk upright on two legs. it cannot be used to explain the extremely complex social interactions that humans are involved in, of which homosexuality is one.

Two people with different ideas of reality cannot argue because the argument must be about the subject (in this case, homosexuality) as it pertains to a common view of reality. So, since there are probably some evolutionists in the audience, he has to argue his point to them as well. If he only argued the Christian standpoint, he could not persuade evolutionists of anything.

@Psychotol You bring up an interesting point. If homosexuality is genetic and has been passed on by false heterosexual relationships, then perhaps it is good that gays are being more accepted. They won't be pressured into having kids naturally, and the homosexual gene would cease to exist after a few generations. Or, if it is a choice, more people will be exposed to the homosexual concept and be gay. There, I guess only time will tell the truth.

There is one major flaw to your idea against homosexuality being a mechanism for population control. You state that there must be a mind guiding the course of evolution. This is not true. When a population becomes too large, ecology has ways of reducing the population. The most common example of this is viruses and diseases. Simply put, homosexuals are just attracted to the same gender instead of the opposite as per the norm. There really isn't an answer to your question "Why would anybody choose to be gay?". The only way for you to really understand is if you are gay, and even then it is confusing. And now that I take a wider look at it all, it really isn't a choice, the person's body is just programed that way from birth. It's sort of like a small, adorable, quirk.

Obviously there isn't an actual answer to this question, you're right it makes no sense for natural selection to choose to pass on a trait that would stop people from reproduction. as I said, homosexuality most likely developed as a result of the evolution of bisexuality, why would bisexuality develop you may ask? Well, think about it, in a societal setting, one who is willing to gain, ahem, "favor" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) from other members of the same gender, this would allow one to gain higher societal standing, and if one has higher societal standing then they will be more likely to find a mate (or mates?) and thus pass on there genes better than heterosexuals.

Great studies have recently been done on this, showing similar antagonistic selection in other species, as well as our own. We can easily measure someone's fertility, and have found that mother's of gay males are much more fertile than those of heterosexuals.

A genetic gene doesn't always show up. It depends on if it's dominent or resecive. Example your eye color. Your father could have blue, and your mother green. You could have green due to have that trait stronger in you. Also do you choose if your left/right handed? Your skin color? Your eye color? Which are all genetic. And did you choose to be straight? what you seem to not understand is the idea of polygenic inheritance. The way that peoples sexuality is determined is by multiple alleles, and different combinations bring out different things, like orientation. sexuality is as much a choice as eye color, which is determined in the same way. This also explains how homosexuality is still present, as two hetero people can have their egg and sperm match up in such a way that they have a gay child. you probably have the potential make a gay child.

Mutations can occur to our DNA, allowing for someone to be gay without having gay predecessors. Also, many gays never come out as being gay, and an indeterminable number live their lives as if they were heterosexual, getting married to a person of the opposite sex and having children who could carry the trait. Oh, and natural selection is not a sentient being. It is a naturally occurring process, and in human terms, it is not very relevant, as everyone is treated more or less equally.

The fact that you can find none of this information in our modern history texts should be telling enough. If you live close to a good library, I would suggest you do more reading on the subject. evolution explains why we have ears and walk upright on two legs. it cannot be used to explain the extremely complex social interactions that humans are involved in, of which homosexuality is one.

Valid points. However, when you choose to use the Bible as a moral source, you can't just pick & choose the bits that you agree with and leave the rest that don't agree with. As for the evolution POV, I agree with you that it makes no sense for the gene for homosexuality to be passed. However, the development of the fetus is a complex process, individuals could be born with a preference contra to what would be deemed as normal.

I'm sorry, but how can you argue from both an evolutionary and a biblical standpoint that homosexuality is wrong? If you take with a pinch of salt what is said in Genesis about the creation of the natural world, then why do you believe de facto what is said in Leviticus about homosexuality? Whatever your veiws on the central thesis of the Bible are, which I respect entirely, surely you can see that you can't follow every word exactly, let alone pick and choose the bits you want to believe.

Two people with different ideas of reality cannot argue because the argument must be about the subject (in this case, homosexuality) as it pertains to a common view of reality. So, since there are probably some evolutionists in the audience, he has to argue his point to them as well. If he only argued the Christian standpoint, he could not persuade evolutionists of anything.

@Psychotol You bring up an interesting point. If homosexuality is genetic and has been passed on by false heterosexual relationships, then perhaps it is good that gays are being more accepted. They won't be pressured into having kids naturally, and the homosexual gene would cease to exist after a few generations. Or, if it is a choice, more people will be exposed to the homosexual concept and be gay. There, I guess only time will tell the truth.

@EightyBrains My point does, of course assume it's genetic. It seems unlikely that it's merely a choice unless you assume everyone is bisexual.
If it were genetic, and the stigma was to be completely eradicated, then the population would be mainly straight with some bisexual and a few fully gay, because the only people breeding would be those naturally inclined to do so.
On a political level, I gotta ask why homosexuality should be considered a social ill or problem when it has no ill effect?

There is one major flaw to your idea against homosexuality being a mechanism for population control. You state that there must be a mind guiding the course of evolution. This is not true. When a population becomes too large, ecology has ways of reducing the population. The most common example of this is viruses and diseases. Please become acquainted with biology before making such statements.

Simply put, homosexuals are just attracted to the same gender instead of the opposite as per the norm. There really isn't an answer to your question "Why would anybody choose to be gay?". The only way for you to really understand is if you are gay, and even then it is confusing. They denounced their findings and the head of the largest genetics department in the country, and another researcher said their conclusions can, contrarily, also be heavily related to environmental causes.

Pure hypothesis: "Gay gene" increases likelihood of homosexuality, but not certainty. This results in some of those with the gene not seeking to pass their genes directly, so spending more energy on the wellbeing of the whole tribe, which also has the gene (remember our genes still think we're tribal). Could these additional carers increase the likelihood of that gene *indirectly* surviving into the next generation?
(Bear in mind the twins issue shows increased likelihood, not certainty.)

The gene that can cause homosexuality is also correlated with greater fertility amongst females. Evolution is about survival or populations not individuals. Within a kin group if the gene causes one or two individuals to be gay that evolutionary price is outweighed by the greater fertility of their straight female relatives. This pattern is seen both in human kin groups and other mammals.

Hell is simply the absence of God and all the pleasures we have corrupted and taken for granted. If we so choose a reality absent of him which happens to be torture in of its self...it is by our choice.

@dard1313 So "good" is unquestioning obedience to a self proclaimed tyrant? Yep that sounds like a definition for good that illiterate, self-important goat herders would have come up with to keep control of their nomadic bands. Thank you for confirming my suspicions that these myths about gods have all the tell tale signs of being made up by people.

goldengun85, thank you. I don't mean to offend, but rarely do I hear reasonable religious arguments. You do have a good point, I cannot see any reason for homosexuality through the evolutionary process.
You are correct that there would have to be a "guiding hand" for population control. Evolution is responsible for blind, indefinite reproduction, and nothing more. I dare to say this (I do not think homosexuality is a bad thing), but it makes sense that it's either a choice, or a mutation.

@zach118 The gene that can cause homosexuality is also correlated with greater fertility amongst females. Evolution is about survival or populations not individuals. Within a kin group if the gene causes one or two individuals to be gay that evolutionary price is outweighed by the greater fertility of their straight female relatives. This pattern is seen both in human kin groups and other mammals.

as I said, homosexuality most likely developed as a result of the evolution of bisexuality, why would bisexuality develop you may ask? Well, think about it, in a societal setting, one who is willing to gain, ahem, "favor" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) from other members of the same gender, this would allow one to gain higher societal standing, and if one has higher societal standing then they will be more likely to find a mate (or mates?) and thus pass on there genes better than heterosexuals.

First off, Homosexuality is not determined by a single gene, it is polygenic and has other factors such as hormonal imbalances during prenatal development
The evolution of homosexuality is an interesting topic, a common and interesting theory (that also applies to other species with homosexuals) is that it emerged from the development of Bisexuality, and I have to continue this explanation in a new comment.

It's possible that producing gay children is a side effect of a more "beneficial" gene. For example, in Africa, sickle-cell anemia has not been weeded out by natural selection. Why not? Because people who are carriers for sickle cell also tend to be highly resistant to malaria. So children without sickle cell die young of malaria & those with sickle cell live.
In this case, a gene that produces a high fertility rate in a woman may also have the side effect of sometimes producing gay children.
