lol my remaining character count was reaching it's limit so i had to comment again. i just couldn't leave without expressing how awesome i think it is that you appreciate old games like this.

also i recommend playing bmups on 1 credit or a couple at most(if you absolutely must) as it preserves the longevity and keeps from spoiling things.

sure i can name a bunch of classics and even the more obscure titles as well but i can't believe nobody mentioned the D&D series. easily one of the most innovative 2d side scrolling bmups ever made. often bmups boast innovation by merely adding new weapons, more characters, a combo/juggle system but D&D went beyond that and really capitalized on the rpg element. this meant making choices(char customization and paths) instead of just mindlessly beating up enemies.
