Do your gaming on KDE and press ALT+Shift+F12 before starting the game. Desktop compositing really kills a big chunk of performance (at least for me).
@SeltsamerAttraktor Afaik KWin automatically disables compositing when entering fullscreen applications (not sure though) and resumes when quitting. At the end I didn't notice some difference in performance when running Rage in Unity, KDE or LXDE, but I didn't really measure it.
@dinex9r Well, that was never that reliable for me.
Additionally, I don't let my games run in fullscreen anymore. I always set them to window mode now (or virtual desktop in the case of wine), and use kwin's functionality to disable the window's borders and make it overlap everything else on start up. This way, Alt+Tab always works, just the way it does in Windows.
@grogmaninteractive I think, that there's no huge difference in terms of performance. Maybe Compiz takes away 1 or more fps. And I'm using Unity, as well as KDE (mainly) and LXDE :D
Nice, I really have to try this. Currently I play on Windows with a very similar system (Q6600, 4GB, Nvidia GTX 260). My graphics looks a bit better than yours but that might also be due to my optimized rageconfig.cfg settings.
Still the game seems to run well enough on Linux. ID-Software should just bundle it with the Wine libraries, optimize it a bit and then release it as a Linux client. Like Google did with Picassa.
@BremerAl On my Win7 the game is freezing all the time and the textures need 2-3 seconds to load :/ After 2 days trying everything I could find didn't help, wine was the last chance I had. I was really surprised, that i worked out of the box, but it crashed after exiting the Ark. With the latest patch this was solved, but therefore I git these artifacts :D
@dinex9r You can disable the lowres textures and prevent the engine from falling back to lower settings. I use a custom config file which I put together by using the config generator from "Do Not Argue" and some tips from a Steam thread:
It seems like I can't post the links here. I always get "Error, try again" if my post contains links. Just Google for "Rage config maker" and check the Rage subforum on Steam.

@dinex9r They've turned auto-switching in new releases off due to a bug in Intel mesa drivers which would cause KWin to crash. :(

Do you think Ubuntu 11.10 performance are better than Ubuntu 10.10? Are you using Unity or Gnome 2.0?

If they can fix that, I'll be totally happy :)
Btw. in how far could you improve your textures?

@BremerAl Thanks! Guess I'll try that next week.
