Well I just saw Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena last Thursday. In my humble opinion they were just as good in 2011 as they were back in (oh my gawd) 1975.I suppose Ferry and Roxy are like fine wine...they get better with age.Long Live Roxy and thanks for posting this FANTASTIC clip. I play it in my car when traffic jams give me the willies.
I prefer the brunette.Great pic on the album of her, with Bryan's sexually frustrated look. She is unmoved. They look better than they sound though!-Love that synth come in.That's avante' garde.Listen to Phil on that rythem guitar!
Viva! Roxy
Damn BigDeanoSyd, thanks for putting this up! I saw BF in about 1977 and this is just what I remember! He did "Let's Stick Together" EXACTLY like the video from the same period....of course the "ow ow ow" woman was surely not Geri Hall! Hell, what did I know? I was just a kid! LOL! Even then, he was so hot! Still is!
i heard this when it came out, from viva, i'm 42 now and still love it. would like to pay respect to my older brother john for a love of roxy and my biggest influence, today i do love the Lord but my brother is also my hero
So that's Doreen Chanter...she also duets with John Wetton (playing bass here) on "Same Time Next Week" from Phil Manzanera's brilliant "Diamond Head" solo LP. Small Roxy Music world....
@tiefhals John Guftason is playing bass on this Both Ends Burning clip from 1975. Wetton plays on 5 songs from 1974 and Sal Maida on 2 songs from 1973. Check wiki : Viva! (roxy music album)--for details.
OK, now the $64,000 question. Can anyone identify those two lovely ladies? I believe on the Viva! album they are only identified as "The Sirens" (that was the new album when this show took place) I have a compilation video that includes this film, but the studio version is dubbed in, thus every time they showed the girls singing they filmed them in negative in color(no female backing vocals on the album). Fell for the blonde first time I saw her, when she let her hair fall in front of her face.
Sorry, ran out of characters. Was gonna say she looked very Veronica Lake. Cool dresses too! Just tight enough to flatter but still allow for lots of movement.
The 'Sirens' were Doreen Chanter (Blonde) and Jacqui Sullivan (Brunette), they were both featured on the cover of 'VIVA Roxy Music' in different costumes, here they are wearing outfits based on female American G.I. uniforms of WWII, Bryans uniform too! He certainly liked to dress up and style everything! The girls can be seen in the video to the right as well...in 'Related Videos' the one posted by Omayyad
Great video, the entire show (Wembley October 1975) was filmed but the master tapes could not be found at the time they where putting the Thrill OfIt All DVD together. They would release this on DVD if they had the tapes.
You're right - best live version by miles. I had no idea RM were this good. They've always been a bit tainted by the Glam Rock thing. Shame as technically brill. Thanks for posting BigDeano.
Fantastic video, first turned me on to Roxy! Other highlights on that one include Neil Hubbard's solo on "My Only Love" and the entire band tearing through Neil Young's "Like A Hurricaine" Neither of those version's is on the High Road CD. Don't know if that one exists on CD.
@BigDeanoSyd Ha, it's taken you two years to get this answer. Baseley09 is referring to a bootleg of Roxy's concert from Frejus, France in 1982. I think he got the "solo" part wrong.
Thank you. That's a fun discovery. Knowing how picky and aesthetic-worried he is, my guess is that Bryan Ferry personally chose this video still for the cover of Viva!
He does seem about to have a passionate romance with her and she looks pleased!
From my understanding most of the work behind this album was done by Manzanera. Which is why some of the songs chosen aren't Bryans best vocally, such as 'if there is something'.
Personally I agree. But his voice does go funny where he sings 'takes me right back when you were young'. I don't think Ferry would have chosen that performance whereas Manzanera would because of other musical highlights.
Thank you for uploading this wonder, BigDeanoSyd. You've made my day!
I love many details here. The fine bassist Guy Pratt looks from far away like Cheap Trick's Robin Zander and one of the backing singers is Debbie Harry-like.
I guess that the brunette singer is the beauty on the cover of Viva!, though she isn't wearing a red dress here.
A burning performance, filled with many emotions from Bryan Ferry. Love the swooning faces at the end. Sexy.
The blonde 'Debbie Harry' lookalike is also on the cover of Viva, with her head down behind/between Bryan and the brunette, she's wearing a purple version of the red dress!... I didn't notice her there for many years! Glad you like it!...

This is a live recording, so Bryan Ferry's vocals aren't too polished, but they do transmit many emotions and excitement.
Manzanera is wonderful, of course.

Funny because I actually prefer the live VIVA version of 'If there is something' to the studio one
