Well, of course it's all speculation now. But I would have to say Calzaghe never had that much power in his left, his knockouts and stoppages came from fighting bums. Roy, would have been too quick for him, even if he did have a big left, and as a naturally bigger and stonger man, could have brought calzaghe out in one of his shows of machismo, and overpowered him. Then it'd be for roy to decide whether to go for KO or to perform for the full 12, because he was seriously that good.

His left was a hell of a lot better back then, true. I don't think it would've given Roy much trouble though as his footwork was unbelievable. I say about Calzaghe being drawn into a toe to toe style because he's well known for doing it. As he never faught quality prime opposition, he was never tested at the highest level, and due to his lack of power and amaturish style, he wouldn't have had the number of a prime roy jones. His fitness is his main attribute and he'd have made a better 15 round fighter as he can dance all night. Kessler was a hard fight and luckily he kept his composure, but he's lost it plenty of times.

Calzaghe was never a big enough name to get the fights against the likes of Jones when they were in there prime. Jones has been quoted as saying Joe was too bigger risk for too little money. I would argue with anyone who says Hopkins was faded when they met though coz I believe Hopkins has got better with age. Though he did beat him through sheer work rate rather than skill.
Oh and I think the world would be a better place if bigots weren't taught to read.

Im not sticking up for Jones by any means. He has constantly been dogged by rumours of him hand picking opponents. But a fight between these two back in the day wouldve been a classic.

Roy, would have been too quick for him, even if he did have a big left, and as a naturally bigger and stonger man, could have brought calzaghe out in one of his shows of machismo, and overpowered him. Then it'd be for roy to decide whether to go for KO or to perform for the full 12, because he was seriously that good.

well i would agree that he never had amazing power in his left...just that it was a big aspect to his style 10 years ago...but i dont think calzaghe would be drawn out by the machismo because thoughout his carrer calzaghe has shown himself to be a very inteligent boxer as wel as being able 2 change his style against awkward fighters...but i cant really see a loss by ko because if you look at all calzaghes knockdowns he was always able to compose himself under the pressure...again just my opinion

His left was a hell of a lot better back then, true. I don't think it would've given Roy much trouble though as his footwork was unbelievable. I say about Calzaghe being drawn into a toe to toe style because he's well known for doing it. Did you see him fight Sabbio Beaker (not sure I spelled that right), He almost lost to a bum because he was drawn into the wrong kind of fight, if he'd done that against top knotch fighters, he'd have paid a heavy price.

but you have to remember calzaghe has always had very good movement and footwork as well....yeah i saw da bika fight but u have to remember in that fight bika fought a very dirty fight which brought out the brawler in calzaghe but look at him in the kessler fight...kessler was trying to go toe to toe....but calzaghe stayed well clear but keept the pressure on at the same time....calzaghe has had bad fights but when he's on point he would be a tough opponent for any1

Calzaghe's movement and footwork looked superior back then because he was fighting inferior boxers. As he never faught quality prime opposition, he was never tested at the highest level, and due to his lack of power and amaturish style, he wouldn't have had the number of a prime roy jones. His fitness is his main attribute and he'd have made a better 15 round fighter as he can dance all night. Kessler was a hard fight and luckily he kept his composure, but he's lost it plenty of times.

Calzaghe should be considered a legend simply for his unbeaten record , his work rate and determination , no doubt there.
But this "fight" was between a boxer coming to the end of his career against one whos career effectively ended years ago.
More or less a 4 round fight. Calzaghe is the man but to be honest i felt sorry for Jones who was clearly only a slow imitation of his former great self.

Why do people keep on about the age gap? Age is not a factor, Jones jr proved himself against the best and moved up and down the weights, something that ages a fighter more than their years. Calzaghe will always be remembered for retiring unbeaten, assuming he retires soon. But an unbeaten record does not make a man a legend. Duran is a legend, and he lost plenty, but look at the opposition. Calzaghe has amazing fitness and can bounce around for 12 rounds, sure, but fight prime p4p? No way.

To be fair Jones was never the same after his move up and back from heavyweight. Im a Calzaghe fan ( even though he is a bit slappy at times ) but he has a phenomonal work rate and always finds a way to win.
Not an issue of the age gap between them but Jones was clearly far from the fighter of old. Shame this didnt take place back in the day.
Not saying the outcome wouldve been different but it wouldve been a hell of a fight.

Nobody who reaches the championship level should have a promoter anymore. You get to the top of the game then there should be no hiding behind them or them keeping you back because they are scared.
