well the reason they cut their hair is that they are going bald...the guys are hitting 50...and their music would sound much different if Cliff were alive...cliff taught them alot of their arrangements and made their song much more complex..not only that mustaine had alot to do with that as well......and hetfield is not the main engine of the band...it lars ulrich AND hetfield....actually more ulrich...
Listen I won't pretend that I know a thing about metal music or Metallica, but what I do know...Once you are no longer "underground" and you get signed by a BIG record company...YOU EITHER PLAY THE GAME OR YOU STAY UNDERGROUND...The money, the fame, the pussy....WHATEVER!!!! Sometimes musicians sell their souls and do what they are told....Many say Metallica sold out...There is GREAT music out there that NEVER gets heard...I'm sure these bands are reminded of that by the record companies...
Why does everyone post shit saying Cliff wouldn't stand for this or Cliff wouldn't have done that. Did any of you know Cliff or what he actually was thinking? I bet you didn't. I know it's fun to speculate on how things might have been, but unless you you were actually a member of Metallica you have no idea what the inner workings of the band was like back in the day.
Congrats my friend... that was exactly what I was trying to tell but those spokesmen really piss me off as they bash Metallica while they try to honor Cliff. as if they were a member of the band... =)
maybe they would be at the same place, maybe not. i agree that mainly james is the engine, the power of metallica, but don't let us forget that cliff delivered such epic melodies in Kill'em All and Ride - his musical education just made those songs special imo!
they still do a great job, but I personally think, with Cliff there would be more parts on nowadays records like we love in master, ride, kill'em all. they do a great job but with Cliff they'd be more like in old days
Would you also say or imagine the same for the rest of those guys if we were back in 1986?
No.
Everything changes.
I got used to Metallica's skin-change from years to years and as I get older I understand them better not means of musicality, 'cuz I listen to more progressive and brutal things now but in means of mentality and life experience. It's sometimes hard to keep a specific spirit when the surrounding conditions change.
look, if someone is in the balding process ( like most middle age men are) then his hair doesn't look decent, it looks disproportional and has no form.

Many of the people listening to Metallica cannot imagine what kind of a band would be there with Cliff alive today.
They would be at the same place where they are today, guys. OK, Cliff is not a more metal-head than any of those guys. He was a pure rocker he would do Load and Reload and others, too. He was a talented bass guitarist and the band would head to the same direction if he were alive.
So stop making this comparison.
James Hetfield is the main engine of this band for its philosophy.
@counternub yes if it wasn't for lars in the early days metallica wouldn't of went nowhere...lars was the one out there promoting them getting them the gigs..gettin the demos out making the posters...james says that himself in a documentary...i think it was the get thrashed one
@Autopsium Ok, and Cliff died because he was in Hetfield's Bunk. Imagin if James died in stead; there WOUDLD be a difference. Because Cliff won the rock, paper, scissors debate, he slept in the top (James') bunk on the tour bus. I'm not trying to play the What If game, but Metallica, depending on who they brought on to replace James, could have gone a different direction.
Sure, I was trying to say that with all my respect for a former musician who lost his life, I don't understand why some people hold Cliff over all of them just because he is dead.
Yes Cliff was involved with the most precious works of Metallica but those brilliant guitar riffs of Master of Puppets let's say, were written with cooperation of James & Kirk. He was a good bass player and that was it. OTOH, James has "mainly" shaped Metallica into what it is today.
@jw5y66 James had called the top bunk on the driver's side, not Kirk, and Cliff had supposedly called it the same time that James did, so that started the rock paper scissors match witch Cliff won. I DID my research man. Wiki is wrong, so don't rely on that; use instead the band's words in their documentary where they talk about that night.
actually I answered that one according to my point of view down there.
Yes they could be but in time they feed both their wallets and also their hunger for shouting out their ideas. They, especially James Hetfield vomited his anger that he had in the beginning of their career through all those years. Now the sides, James&Metallica vs. life, seem even. Every musician's and person's character evolves differently. Lars is a main fact for them to cut the gas.
Lars, from the beginning, was always a bit more kind of a hard rocker instead of metal head. Like Venom was one of the most influencing bands for James and Deep Purple for Lars if I remember correct. And the drumming style for a band, especially a metal band, really defines the rhythmic intentions and the way they go towards. From AJFA drumming to Load style... Even in DM where did those drum attacks go? Not a single one?? despite good guitar riffs... sums it up a bit...
@Autopsium To be honest,Cliff wrote the Ride the Lighting and Master of Puppets songs that were not stolen from Dave Mustaine...I love Metallica, and the riffs that Dave wrote in Metallica obviously belong to Metallica.but this is the truth.
I didn't say Cliff isn't talented. Sure he was. but I wanted to express that the remaining band members put in as much as Cliff did so... I just tried to say that holding Cliff in a higher level than the whole band is wrong just because he passed away. and he would "probably" head to the same direction as the other guys did so. By judging the looks back in those days, James looked as heavy as Cliff did.
@Autopsium Yeah James has always been the band's frontman.I'm not saying that Cliff was the only important member,Metallica would never be Metallica without Metallica.
Neither Lars nor the other people can exactly read the future. It's kind of a sentimental shrift in means of paying their tribute to their old friend and band mate.
I don't think if you have asked them back in 1986 they would say "ohh yes we're going to release two albums that will totally disappoint our fans".
As the time flows, everything changes. Maybe with sharp turns or slightly... but it does.
@Autopsium wrong.the main influences on cliff were classical,southern/country and progressive music. the progressive part came out in "...and justice for all" which is still heavily made of last cliff's compositions, bass would have a major role in mixing and arrangements.maybe the black album would still be the same, because of the country influences and bob rock's work (maybe he wouldn't even have the same strong role if cliff were still alive). continues..
@Autopsium take the first albums-take the booklet-look who wrote the god damn songs!....and now stay in your oppinion....cliff was maybe just one part of metallica...but just 100% metallica are Fucking METALLICA....rip metallica since 1986
I have already memorized all those info and known it for 18 years now. So I don't care what anybody else thinks about this. Opinions are opinions.
Cliff makes sense to me but as much as the other members of Metallica... not less not more. If there weren't other members of Metallica who kept going with this we wouldn't be enjoying "Cliff" era or wouldn't be able to listen to Master of Puppets live so many times, too...
@Autopsium I disagree. Burton was probably the biggest influence to what Metallica became out of the 4. He was the one that introduced the guys to jazz and classical. I don't think they would have done Load or ReLoad had he not died.
Cliff drew the main line and James & Lars being the first ones to shape it what it became today.
James Hetfield is a good song composer and lyrics writer. I'm not talking about pure influence, I'm talking about the main engine that kept Metallica going through all those years. It's really insulting to say Metallica are nothing without Cliff. I'm not talking to you particularly I'm talking about the reason that makes me write that comment.
I never said anything bad about James Hetfield or that Metallica are nothing without Cliff. Fair enough, you weren't talking to me particularly but still. ...And Justice For All and Metallica are both as good as their first three albums in my opinion and they were done without Cliff. I also think Death Magnetic is great. But I mean have you heard Lulu?.. Maybe Cliff would have stood for it, we'll never know, but i don't think he would have.
Probably... My point was that... He would have or not. We can't be 100% sure about this. Anyway... I was always standing against comparisons like Metallica vs Megadeth or "w or w/o Cliff"... I didn't think my top comment would have that much reaction... :)
Anyway... thanx to Cliff for his great contribution & efforts and let's say RIP Cliff & Long Live Metallica...
@Autopsium WRONG!!!!...u know what .....yah...cliff prolly would've gone along with load and reload..but quit just like newsted did at the exact same time....metallica started losing their balls in those sessions...rick rubin tried hard to bring it back to the old days....but hetfield can't write lyrics anymore or sing...
I don't think it is because that Hetfield "can't" write lyrics... he can... but the MOP-era passion has gone a long time ago. As in the previous comment of yours, they are around ages of 50's... don't expect them to be in the same shape as they were back in 80's...
about being the main engine I meant the energy on the stage... up to Napster things Lars wasn't that much involved with both press & business side of Metallica.
@Autopsium How can you possibly know that?!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! You should listen some Hetfields intervies talking about Cliffs influence on himself and on Metallica. Although is also true that Hetfield is the main engine of Metallica as we know it today, prof of that is that Lars and himself are the only original band members who ve been there since the beginning.
i think the reason why 45 people thumbs down this is cause of the sound but i would only give it thumbs down cause who ever was filming didnt show enough of cliff but i gave this thumbs up cause this song is the fucken sweet and my moms favorite
THis is when METALLICA was a well Oiled Machine. Back then Metallica had their most unfriendliest airwave songs ever.It wasn't until 1991 with their Black Album that made them Famous(Bob ROCK) and what some say Sold Them Out. Long verses,, heavy tracked dual Guitars, and Great lryics separated them from other poser Bands. Well, just ask Dave Mustaine. James, Cliff, and Kirk were on the money along with Lars they had the METAL World by the Balls(Literally!) Leave ME THE FUCK ALONE FUCKKERS
It seems like when the band had all of the original members, that they were really happy with what they did. Now it seems they keep going just for the sake of doing it. I know the rest of the band have never fully gotten over Cliff's death, but still... that's just my take on it.
Cliff Burton..... R.I.P.... you were the reason I started playing bass.. and the reason I started writing music.. Every song I write is in hopes that'll some where you'll hear it.. and realize that you were the heart of Metallica.. the heart of Music.. I hope one day I can match your skill and musical prowess.. as you always said "Bach was the god of bass." \m/ (-.-) \m/ fucking love bach as well as MetallicA
@MrRiky12 you know that Cliff said that he wanted to play some softer/calmer music or whatever you call it, in hes last or one of hes last interviews. Bad english sry
Rob is good but is NOTHING compared to Cliff Burton... Cliff Burton was a Genius and to this day remains my SOLE inspiration for my music writing.. if I could understand only a fraction of what went on in that man's head.. only then would I be able to master the art of bassery.. RIP CLIFF!!!!
@momentofsciencetx no no no death is eventual for everyone and everyone left in its wake has to deal. and metallica deal t with it well have you heard and justice for all....... sarcasm is implied...
The Father of Cliff Burton, Ray Burton, at the age of 86 thanks all of Cliff's fans for the support they have given him since his death. Today marks the 25th Anniversary of Cliffs tragic death. May he live forever in our hearts.

When Metallica was still good. Lars played fairly well back then. Too bad he has let his chops get so bad in recent years. The band as a whole really suffers for it. Cliff was definitely great! Robert has been a great addition, he has way more mojo than Jason.

Time, I hate you. You've been cruel to this band.
Heartfelt thanks to the person who filmed this.
diegoambrosio 2 months ago
It seems like when the band had all of the original members, that they were really happy with what they did. Now it seems they keep going just for the sake of doing it. I know the rest of the band have never fully gotten over Cliff's death, but still... that's just my take on it.

@mrmonster125 Yeah, it's really sad. Cliff was the heart and soul of the band and was and still is the epitome of the classic trash metal Metallica.

If we can't have Cliff, I am happy we got Robert Trujillo
TheFillyPhan 3 months ago
Rob is good but is NOTHING compared to Cliff Burton... Cliff Burton was a Genius and to this day remains my SOLE inspiration for my music writing.. if I could understand only a fraction of what went on in that man's head.. only then would I be able to master the art of bassery.. RIP CLIFF!!!!

SPREAD THE WORD ON METALLICA VIDS

When Metallica was still good. Lars played fairly well back then. Too bad he has let his chops get so bad in recent years. The band as a whole really suffers for it. Cliff was definitely great! Robert has been a great addition, he has way more mojo than Jason.
