Its called "THE TRADE DEFICIT"... Most of these come in on ships from China....The USA has nothing to ship back....It would cost more to ship them back empty then it cost to make another one using 2 dollar a day chinese labor and their state subsidized steel industry..
@rainmechanic I agree. It seems to be a sensationaized form of construction. It's sad that we're using steel in this manner. Not practical whatsoever. Maybe collapsable containers could be used and take up less space on ships that have some items to export from the U.S. I'm an electrical engineer and majority of electronics assemblies (industrial, military, telecom) are built in the Far East. It wasn't thay way 10 yrs ago. Consumer has always been overseas however.
@TheGreenfrog140 In AZ they are less than $3k for a 40 by 8 foot wide. Try your local Craigslist, search shipping container/ or sea container. A wooden shed that size, would cost $7K. Most people place these in cool Summer, cold Winter areas. They make for a very secure garage/storage too.
@My1968Impala I would love to start purchasing these and learn how to build a home in it. but the land is so expensive. My dream is to live in a paid off house with not much bills... this seems to be the only way for now..
@My1968Impala Thanks a lot for the information. I wonder how much does a used container cost. or the recycled one... I have a tight budget here... thats why i am looking into this. Planning on living on a farm.
As an engineer I would say the cost build this thing using shiping containers would be more than using standard off the shielf all metal building materials! So this is more vanity
@perfect career ,we dont have to pursue this idea, our president is already making sure more of us are homeless, but a metal box is way better than cardboard
If you are considering modular or prefab home, building with recycled shipping containers is worth taking a look at.

@PerfectCareer4uCom Yeah? Now let's get real: Put them where? And zoning? Water, heat, cooling, electric? Don't tell me "Solar" until you've personally dealt with the fallacy of batteries.

@PerfectCareer4uCom That's what I'd say too, but I think the container homes would not be available to the homeless if they were built. The problem in the U.S. is not finding empty units,it's finding the money to pay rent on the units.
@PerfectCareer4uCom "This is a great idea. Shipping containers converted into homes can get so many families off the streets. We need to pursue this with a passion." - True.
I am SOOO there :-) Nice work. I've been googling container structure for awhile now and just this week started hot-gluing HO (model train) scale container models together to visualize different configurations. Hot glue is easily redone. There's also a Google sketch-up container model for 3-D visualization of container structures.
How the hell are holiday pics relevant? plus the ridged sides of the containers look ugly. With a bit of effort to smooth them out so they DON'T look like containers would pay dividends for aesthetics
