Islam had made a peaceful space for culture to develop independently of religion in those places - but these developments were not in accord with the teachings of Islam and in the early 12th century (i don´t have the exact details to hand) this drift away from Islam towards more humane values was stopped short because there is no reform in Islam except the closer adherence to the mostly awful teachings of its mostly awful founder.

It does not claim to be the direct dictated word of God. It does not castrate the human soul with quite the efficiency that the Koran does.

@oihhow Indeed other cultures share a lack of (self-)criticism aswell. 500 years ago In europe a culture of government (and universal) critique emerged develeoped to a whole new level 300 years ago and finally spread into what we call western world today. This western critical spirit is the reason why western societies are much less corrupt much more productive and much more free in general then the rest of the world. Some countries like india adapt this culture and flourish.

The culture of self and critique and freedom of thought (which are mutually dependant) was it in the first place put europe in a position to colonize others. Complex state theories of sovereignity and the common good evolved from it and made the west what it is today. Look at India: they were a colony once and they are productive where they adapted western culture.
@oihhow now look at saudi-arabia. they have never been a colony and still nothing worth mentioning comes from there. No patents no literature nothing! If you want to succeed in this modern world you have to adapt western work ethics and (at least partly) the western philosophy of freedom and critical spirit. @Paneuropax I understand that the culture in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia has always been very submissive to oppressive regimes and the fundamentalist culture it holds on to is one of the main reasons, I'm not saying the people themselves and the culture gets no blame, but modern imperialism plays such a huge role as well, if not the dominant one. One of the only reasons the Saudi dictatorship, the way it exists now, got to power and stays in power is imperial influence.

@Paneuropax My understanding of modern imperialism is that the majority of third world countries, and especially Arab countries, are as responsible for their destinies as when they were under colonial rule. So if colonies were ultimately more responsible than the empires, then ok. The idea that the US ever been even remotely interested in promoting democracy is not consistent with its foreign policy record, in fact, the opposite is obvious, and that's the standard for all major empires.

The "enlargement" policy of the clinton administration was basically only about democracy promotion and Bush even expanded the circle of countries to democratise eventhough his militaristic approach largely failed. There are tons of american ngo's promoting democracy and the US are the single biggest donor of developement aid and private donations. @oihhow They were responsible insofar they didn't develop a progressive culture as fast as the europeans but if you speak about the colonial era itself they had very little choice because the european plenitude of power and technology was overwhelming and more importantly europeans had the will to openly oppress -both of which is not the case in todays modern world. All western states condemn imperialism and if they would still practice it it had to be secretive and thus fars less effective.

Islam had made a peaceful space for culture to develop independently of religion in those places - but these developments were not in accord with the teachings of Islam and in the early 12th century (i don´t have the exact details to hand) this drift away from Islam towards more humane values was stopped short because there is no reform in Islam except the closer adherence to the mostly awful teachings of its mostly awful founder.

Also, the fact is, that Islam is very simple creed and obviously has an appeal to some primitive needs - my fear is that it works. If Orthodox Judaism were as strong in the world, i would, indeed, consider it a greater threat

The US/British empires placed the filthy dictators in charge of the Arab world after decolonization and ensured they stayed in power, blocked democracy, prevented development and stole (and still are stealing) their resources through this neocolonial set-up. This western critical spirit is the reason why western societies are much less corrupt much more productive and much more free in general then the rest of the world. Some countries like india adapt this culture and flourish.

The culture of self and critique and freedom of thought (which are mutually dependant) was it in the first place put europe in a position to colonize others. Complex state theories of sovereignity and the common good evolved from it and made the west what it is today. Look at India: they were a colony once and they are productive where they adapted western culture.

@oihhow Eurpeans did so until they developed a countrie of freedom that one after another blew these dictatorships away. Thirde worls countries succeed where they experience a change of culture. Look at asian countries getting into capitalism and more slowly more freedom. Yes the USpromote democracy and they fund corrupt regimes at the same time because there are contending interests within the US. The claim to be responsible for your own destiny is a self-fullfilling prophecy.

@Paneuropax My understanding of modern imperialism is that the majority of third world countries, and especially Arab countries, are as responsible for their destinies as when they were under colonial rule. So if colonies were ultimately more responsible than the empires, then ok. The idea that the US ever been even remotely interested in promoting democracy is not consistent with its foreign policy record, in fact, the opposite is obvious, and that's the standard for all major empires.

The "enlargement" policy of the clinton administration was basically only about democracy promotion and Bush even expanded the circle of countries to democratise eventhough his militaristic approach largely failed. There are tons of american ngo's promoting democracy and the US are the single biggest donor of developement aid and private donations. The Reality is much more complex then narrow anti-imperialist theorizing suggests.

So, you believe colonies during the colonial period were more responsible for their independence than the empires that enslaved them? IMO, thats like saying, ultimately, slaves brought to the US from Africa were responsible for fixing their own problems of enslavement and lack of education and poverty, etc. And we shouldn't put any real blame on their slave masters, thats giving them a silly excuse. I think thats absurd.

@oihhow They were responsible insofar they didn't develop a progressive culture as fast as the europeans but if you speak about the colonial era itself they had very little choice because the european plenitude of power and technology was overwhelming and more importantly europeans had the will to openly oppress -both of which is not the case in todays modern world. All western states condemn imperialism and if they would still practice it it had to be secretive and thus fars less effective.

I believe that the author here is making a logical comparison of the present day with the past, and has reached his conclusions after much comparison.
I do think his intentions are good; he wants to improve the current state of affairs found in his present culture. That he should be given credit for. But how to improve or change things is a complex issue, and all peoples face that same question. His focus is to improve the future quality of living for Arabs, which is a noble goal.
