I bought a Hagstrom HJ800 over a year ago, I played it at the shop a bunch, but before that I had watched this video and one other, which really helped me seek one out to play.
It is a great guitar. A Gibson in the shop felt so good...but the sound was not much better, and this neck has grown on me. Plus, it was less than half the price. And the Gibson had a ply top, this guitar has carved spruce. So I expect this will get nicer and nicer, perhaps not so with the Gibson.
@hermannmaier0 The specialists say that the gibson improves in time, but I do not know for the new modèles.on said generally that are needed ten years:-)
@Vieuxdruide. I bought the HJ 800. I love it, it just need some adjustments (lower the action) . Is there a whole world of difference between the hj800 and the Gibson es 175?
@mback99 i tested the Hagstrom HJ600 and it is a great guitar. I also tested the 5th avenue kingpin i think it is a great guitar as well. Unamplified it sounds as a good acoustic guitarplayer. I didn't tested the both at the same time. I tested the Godin 5th avenue and and a Hoffner and i prefered the Godin! Did you already bought one?
The Hagstrom HJ800 is the best jazz guitar you can get for that price. It even beats some higher priced guitars. It is way better as a jazz guitar then the Godin 5th Avenue or the Hofner HCT J17, however the Godin is more adaptable if its more then just Jazz you're looking for. Very well played piece by the way, very smooth chords, and the lead combination was perfect.
yes i was looking for the jazz sound and the hagstrom was for me the best .....
now i bought a gibson es 175 of 1998 it was a good deal and the sound is very jazzy.
i must just find the good amp :-) i don't like the fender sound so i would like try an henriksen jazz amp 110 er with my gibson and my taylor nylon but in france it's very difficult to find it :-(
Yes I'm a guitarist. I am now raging with jealousy that you have a Gibson ES175. They are about €2500 here and that goes beyond my budget right now. I own a Les Paul, a custom shop fender strat, a yamaha fg180, a yamaha fg365s, an alhambra 7fc and a archtop called a Michigan. I think the fender jazzking is a great amp, but if it just doesn't do it for you try one of the Roland jazz amps as well, the JC120 has a great reputation.
@mback99 i just watchd a video with the kingpin ,now ive never played one but it seems like the playability has a little strain struggle type look to it to it and the sound, this guitar seems a little more versitile and easier to play.plus if you like jaz i think this would be a good one but an es175 suonds great(even though gibsons are a bit overated lol)

no there is not a great difference just the price :-)))) the hagstrom hj 800 is a good guitar.
the gibson is a legend and may be a little more easy to play. For me the gibson was a dream.
the 175 is better in the time ,i don't know for the hagstrom?
i think that the hagstrom is the best jazz guitar you can find for this price with the ibanez af 125
