There is a lot of blame to go around. As for Iran, their Air Force planes should not have used civilian airports. Second, they should not have allowed their civilian air planes to fly into a war zone. Why didn't the Iranians warn the civilian flight?

None of this excuses the actions of the Vincennes when they had the correct flight "squawk" (i.e. flight identification), and misread accurate flight data indicating the plane was actually ascending. The cover up is typical of US government.

I'm not condemning the capt. and the crew, based on what is presented, but clearly, they did make a horrific mistake and what I did not like was that they accepted and partook in that heroes welcome when it was known that a commercial plane was shot down. And I don't think they should have been awarded medals based on the circumstances. Even if it was by error and not intent. That just made the U.S. look like they didn't care or like they were celebrating in the wake of a tragic event.

An F-14 is an intercepter, not an attack airplane. Those US officers should have known that. If they believed that an F-4 or F-5 was headed their way, than the justification for fear has more merit. But an interceptor? That's just ignorance.

You wanted me to carefully watch this? Voilà: it does not change the opinion that it was a deadly mistake and not a planned act - as murder is - against an Iranian civilian aircraft. What McKemma said, is that they not obeyed his order and were looking for trouble by coming into close proximity of the Montgomery. By chasing the gun-boats Vincennes ended up in Iranian waters, but that doesn't make it murder as it was not their intention to shut down a civilian aircraft. Just a deadly mistake.

In worst case you can call it "negligent homicide". It is the same result as if you were racing a car on public road and somebody dies through your action. You did not plan to run somebody down, but you could count on it, that it might happen.

By their negligent way of acting, the Iranian plane was shut down. It is still not a murder nor manslaughter.

The US gov clearly behaved in a dishonorable and disgraceful manner in handing down an illogical report supporting decisions which were contrary to the data. Some lowlevel idiot thought that the plane was descending was the crucial error. This was never questioned. Why didn't the ship's navigators know that they were inside Iranian waters - why didn't they know about the commercial airway? It is shameful that the US government in not saying sorry REGARDLESS of the context of this incident.

2) An Iranian F14 was on the same runway, they flew a commercial jetliner in to a war zone!

You act like a criminal case must be conducted in the minutes they had to decide. Based on the data, it was not a perfect case. BUT the preponderance of evidence was that it was attacking them!!

The fact that the USA allows viewing all of this, should put other nations to shame.

It was Iranian waters - people were killed! If people have jobs of power of life and death you have to justify your decisions. if the US military has to be accountable when its staff make mistakes ... that's my problem.. accountability. @simplefact4u Fact one every one was jumpy from the attack made on USS Stark that killed 40 the year before. Fact two. Iran purposely hid its military air traffic in a civilian airport. They were purposely mixing war machines in with the civilian airliners taking off that day.Iran purposely cordinated the surface hostiles in hopes of causing a tracking issue/confusion so they could get some free press at american expense. They did this for a year before it paid off.
