I've finally figured out what this is for. It's for when you decide to take your tv OUTSIDE in the RAIN. That makes so much sense to make a thousand dollar television designed precisely for that EXTREMELY likely event.
Dude!!!!! I totally need one of those. Don't you hate it when you're watching a movie on you plasma screen TV OUTSIDE and someone comes up with a hose and sprayes it, then it breakes???
Trust me. That thing is IP56 waterproof and thus even protected against powerful water jets. You can believe me, because I actually happen to work for Sanyo.
P.S. There is a new IP66 which even comes with a winter mode allowing functionality even up to -20°C.

Try swimming pools or car washes where advertisements or car wash plans are shown while you're sitting in your car...
Using Winter Mode, you can even use the screen in ski resorts...
