  • Was this a broadway?

  • don't worry, the legacy of pure wrestling lives on with

    current world champion Daniel Bryan!

  • Thank you, Dory for some great memories. The golden age of wrestling for me, to be sure. The Japanese crowd seems to be very appreciative of the scientific style, as am I.

  • This is still the best match I've ever seen. Unfortunately, I can't find the full hour online, but still, the highlights convey its greatness. Thanks!

  • Dory Funk, Jr. was the NWA World's Heavyweight Champion on September 30, 1971.

  • Inoki faught Ali back in the day, no shit !!!!!!! He didnt wear gloves but his wrestling boots lol

  • The speed and pace of this match is amazing

  • this is what im talking about , im gonna look up some more matches

  • Wow, good stuff. Japanese crowds have changed so much too, they were insanely hot for Inoki here.

  • Holy shit these guys move better than alot of crappy wrestlers in the wwe. I love great technical wrestling.

  • Was it a draw or did they give it to there their man from Japan? Usually that was the way it went down. Only Bruno Sammartino would not allow such nonsense when he wrestled in their country.

  • Congratulations to Dory Jr. (and Terry)

for their WELL-DESERVED Hall of Fame

    induction!

  • Two of the greatest of all time.

  • I wonder where I can see the full match, because it looks excellent!

  • this IS wrestling.

  • 私は猪木の大ファンだが、この試合は、伝説に等しい試合だ。

  • I got the 5-disc set of Inoki a few months ago & this was the only match I felt that was missing from that set.

  • Great post! I saw Jack Brisco vs. Inoki in the early 70's and it was excellent. Inoki won with an abdominal stretch, but this match was even more intense, since Dory wouldn't give to Inoki's abdominal stretch.

  • This is like a dream match, right here!

  • Dory Funk Jr trained lita right or not

  • Yes, and a LOT of the current superstars.

  • thank u for teachinf jeff hardy to wrestle dory

  • the greatest pro wrestlers of the modern era are lou thesz, dory funk jr. harley race. jack brisco . gene kiniski. pat o'connor.. ric flair, doesn't even rate with them, and i like ric flair

  • Speaking from a purely technical aspect however, I totally agree with you. I think Dory Funk Jr. is the best technical wrestler of all time.

  • the greatest pro wrestlers of the modern era are lou thesz, dory funk jr. harley race. jack brisco . gene kiniski. pat o'connor.. ric flair, doesn't even rate with them, and i like ric flair

  • "ric flair, doesn't even rate with them"

he beat harley race and had an epic fued with him and in mine (and many other peoples opininions) Ric Flair is the best of all time...bo offense to other greats like the people you mentioned and many others you left off.

  • I think that's unfair, I respect your opinion but honestly...never been a Kiniski fan.

  • Dory, this is a good post. This had to be when you first won the title. I saw you a few times in 1984 in Greenwood, S.C. I know that you saw wrestling slowly evolve into what it is today. I remember Ted Turner bought WJRJ in Atlanta & renamed it WTCG & began broadcasting wrestling on it. Did you ever appear on there as the World's Champion? It would become WTBS in December 1976 when Terry was Champion. So you 2 were a part of history when Ted made his moves.

  • Wow---this is so much better than the pumped up "rock concert" and light show matches of today....even the actual wrestling is so much more intricate and interesting...

    THANKS!

  • This is literally some of the best, most realistic-looking pro wrestling I have ever seen. Antonio Inoki and Dory Funk Jr. are two of the greatest ever, as this match showed.

Look at how smooth, realistic and well-executed everything is, right down to the turn-buckle whips! This even tops some of the NWA's best 80's matches, which in turn top most of today's best matches!

PS- Sorry if this accidentally double-posts.

  • Dory Funk Jr. is one of the greatest of all times. In his day, Triple H, John Cena, Shawn Michaels etc. wouldn't last 5 minutes with him.

  • These guys put on a wrestling clinic in this match. Was it an hour time limit?

  • Now that's what I call pure sportsmanship in every sense of the word, it's great to go back and watch some of these old matches cause they still hold up, I'm a big fan of those matches you and Terry had against Bruiser Brody.

  • Honorable Mentions: Jack Brisco (Jack definitely had the talent, I just didn't like TOO MANY baby faces) , Greg Valentine, Bob Backlund, Ric Flair (1977-1985 his best work) , Mil Mascaras, Tatsumi Fujinami, Bryan Danielson (his legend is still growing) , Kenta Kobashi and Carlos Colon.

  • Two of the greatest of all-time, no one is mentioning Inoki here. MY all-time favorites: 1. Harley Race 2. Dory Funk Jr. 3. Antonio Inoki 4. Billy Robinson 5. Johnny Valentine 6. Jumbo Tsuruta 7. Rick Steamboat 8. Mitsuharu Misawa 9. Nick Bockwinkel 10. Terry Funk
  • Awesomeness! Dory Funk, Jr, is one of the greatest technical wrestlers, no bullshit. I mean learned about you from a video game named, King of Colosseum. The style in that game emulates him very well, counters, reversals, rolls and straight-up technical mat submission wrestling. Then, I look at this match and it makes me like you even more. You and Terry rule!

  • u really think so

  • This is a in 1969 Osaka japan, may be.

  • EXCEPTIONAL FOOTAGE From WHEN WRESTLING WAS AT IT'S BEST. Dory... I never saw a match with you that I didn't like. Such Skill.

    Raymond Forchion

  • I'm 36 & I still love wrestling like this. Vince has killed true pro wrestling with all the Sport Entertainment junk.

  • Hilarous seeing Dory Sr. interfering!

  • Agreed.

  • That's the kind of pro wrestling I like. No big hair and roids, no fireworks and acrobatic top rope nonsense. Real grappling and submission holds. The true art.

  • Amen to that

  • You took the words right out of my mouth. God Bless you!

  • vay a.q

  • The times have changed as the new fans attention span in 2 minutes long and there are more high spots than a telling of a story that Dory could tell.Again times have changed

  • Great video. Just wanted to thank you for being such a good wrestler and for continuing like that. I may be 17 but I can't ignore the true legends of Pro Wrestling, thank you.

  • i read your brother heard from your father that there was a few good fighters other than baba there in japan, which lead your brother to think about japan.

  • classic...love it....

  • good match

  • Now that's pro wrestling at its finest, unfortunatly Arabic and Muslim countries like my country Egypt only air the sports entertainment of WWE. That was a great match Mr. Funk, you and Inoki are one of the true icons of pro wrestling.

  • Awesome stuff! Thanks Mr. Funk for posting this!

  • Where is your school located at.

  • in ocala florida

  • This is when wrestling was "wrestling". Not "sports entertainment". Its a shame it can't be like this anymore. Please post more matches like this!

  • Mr. Funk This is truly special. I would love to see the Brisco match. Thank you for making this sport what it is today

  • It was my father, Dory Funk Sr. He made the first trip to Japan with me. The year was 1969. I do have one tape of Jack and myself good quality from Japan and one from Bayfront Center in St.Petersburg, Florida that is fair video quality.

  • Mr. Funk, I remember seeing you on Championship Wrestling Floria (CWF)in the late 70s early 80s. Incredible matches with the Briscos, Dusty Rhodes, Mike Graham, Barry Windham and many more. You were my favorite "bad guy". I saw you wrestle "Mr.Wrestling II" at the YMCA in Freeport Bahamas! Remember that?...Thanks for the memories!!!!

  • I can't tell you how much I enjoyed watching this match. This was when wrestling was fun....Now I find it repulsive. Thanks for the memories.

  • Was that Dory's father with him on tour? Mr.Dory Funk Sr? What footage! Does anyone have any Dory Jr. vs. Jack Brisco footage from the 1970's? They put on some good matches as well.

  • Just in case you are confused (as I was until I did some research) the match went to the one hour time limit. It might seem like DJ Jr. submitted but he retained the NWA belt.

  • I love the combination of the scientific and the brawling styles. Inoki must have a some immunity to the German suplex since he seems to received it a lot over the years and he always sells it the same way. Look for the match with Vader that's on here somewhere.

  • Wow! Great quality video of a great match. I certainly would love to see the complete match if it is available. Thanks for posting!
