Meninchitis is a probable candidate for the disease he suffered from. His condition was critical for quite a while but he finally "recovered". However, after his recovery his behaviour became more and more excentric, cruel and finally erratic. It is therefore assumed that Caligula suffered a form of brain damage caused by some (infectious) brain disease.
