A bass-"baritone" and not a bass, I think, but who cares! A rich and perfect performance of this wonderful aria from St. John's P. And 'danke' very much to Deutsche Grammophon for responding to worldwide demand and at last re-released the DVD of this unforgettable 1985 performance in Graz Cathedral. To my mind, it can never be bettered.
It never ceases to amaze how Bach could write a superb obligato with a soloist and choir prforming two very different parts, seemingly unrelated, yet it works magificently. That it true genius.
Yes, the soloist sings his score, the choir sings the choral melodi, and add to that how the orchestra instruments and the organ play their scores - and it all fits together into one wonderful entirety. Bach was indeed, as you say, a genius - for me still unsurpassed.
@artgo2000: I think the soloist in this part is Anton Scharinger and not Robert Holl. At 0:30 you can see Holl sitting between the cembalo and the choir. Holl was "only" singing the parts of "jesus", not the bass ariae. This was Scharinger.
Neither before nor after, the technique of polyphony had been so well spent. The result is sublime.
