you said 2A driver?? how?? i saw the video clip there is no circuit...if 100 leds with 3 or 4 AA batteries what voltage of restorers in it? is that really work so far or am i wrong?
CD cases are awesome for all sorts of things, I'm making a beauty dish at the moment using a CD case like the one your using. think I will make this my next project. Thanks man :o)
sir how did u connect all 65 led whether in series or parallel and how is this possible to light all 65 led by using just 4.5volts? plz help me sir..........
@Roh1290 He's driving all the LED's in parallel, however the batteries can't output enough current to damage the LED's and that also means that the LED's are not being driven to rated max voltage. If he had connected the LED's to a power supply capable of more than 2A he's LED's would have burnt.
i really dont understand how do you do that for 100 led light with 3aa battery without any resistor? can i see inside what is look like? pls email me or pm me..
@airloo You can't 3 AA batteries in series can't output the 2A necessary to drive the 100 LED's in parallel, so the effective voltage when the circuit is on is much lower than 3.6V.
Why are you calling this a "flash". Its Not. its a Light. 2 Very different things.
you'll never achieve the power of a traditional flash with this gizmo. don't get me wrong, i love that you used a cd-spindle in a creative way, and on a DSLR that takes Video, this could be very handy. but please stop calling it a "flash"
you should have some resistors in there... you could also use a potentiometer to lower the voltage from the batteries... thus, dimming the LEDs... cool project.
hello, i'm also into macro photography and i would like to build your flash. I will make 2 circuits. one for the outer ring of LED's and one for the inner one. This way I can adjust the brightness of the light. I'm also gonna add two flexibele arms on wich I will put 6 LED' s each so I will have light for the front but also from the left and from the right. These arms will have 2 switches and 4 batteries (1 switch and 2 batteries per arm).
wow.. great.. but one question.. how effective is it? really.. like some other people here, I'd really love to see some photos/videos you took using this ring light..
@rundmc100100 If you want it to last, you will need the resistors. LEDs are NOT light-bulbs. This set-up without resistors will not last long. One LED (the one with the lowest operating voltage) will get all the current and burn. Then the next lowest voltage LED will burn, etc. etc.
I made one with 36 Leds in it. The effect on the camera was amazing. It allowed my Fuji Finepix S5700 camera to take videos and pictures in darkened rooms.
These little gadgets are really worth the effort of making at home :) .
Not bad, Cd spindle case... but how did you wire all of the LED's together? Lot of soldering? Or did you come up with some other neat trick. Jolly Good mate, that's using the old noodle.. Nikon R1C1 is quite a piece of equipment but cost $800+ USD. Drooled over that for a few seconds and realized that sort of cash is just not in the budget. Did find a extremely cheaply made China ring from Cowboy studio (VL-48) $50 USD. Half the reviews say its trash half the review say it works fine..
Thats awsume, I for one have always had to make the best out of what I have and this shows just how smart you are. I'm very impressed the only thing needed is some sample shots then this video would be brillant !
Excellent video. So good I shot down the electronics shop and built my own. I made a few adaptations (a collar with more LEDs shining inwards at 45 degrees and glued in a 67mm adapter ring for my 100mm f2.8L). I saved £400 on a ring flash and couldn't have done it without your video dude! The guy in the shop said it'd never work without a resistor and that the batteries'd last 2-3minutes if wired in parallel - rubbish! It works for 1.5hrs with 3xAA on inner ring and 3xAA on outer ring. Cheers!
That a really clever idea -- do you have any examples of photos that you took using the ring light? Nice job with being creative and keeping the costs down.
I didn't see any flash... this looks more like a ring light not a ring flash.. How come I did see the shutter triger the ringflash? This is cool if a photographer wants to use it with a camera and not have a flash. More natural light and catch this ring light in the eyes, but this is not a flash or a ringflash from what I seen here. It's cool I might make one, but Its not a ringflash call it a ringlihgt.
Nice tutorial and i made my own lights for my camcorder and still camera and I didn't spend more than $60. They rely go over $500 dollars for my camcorder.

The reason why the leds did not fry was the amount of inner resistance of those AA cells. You should have calculated proper current limit resistors for led groups. But it seems to work so...
i don't agree on "you're on idiot" but I do agree with "i'd take any Canon over Nikon". Although Nikon has some great features to it, I personally don't think it can at all compete with Canon.

go on dxomark (.) com then look at the camera rankings.
the D300/D300s outrank the canon 1Dmk3/1Dmk4 which are supposed to be 2 of canon's best cameras.
the D3/D3s/D3X/D700 all outrank the 1DS mk3. and 5D mk2. the 7D fails the most because it's canon's biggest piece of shit....
