Keep up the good work, Cory! It's so inspiring to see such a prolific blogger/author/presenter/artist on the side of civil liberties, free culture, and--really--common sense!
So derivative crap based on others work by millions of untalented hacks is better than the truly talented coming out with original works but less often? I'll take the original works and let the no-talents continue to do what they do best.
You can't create the art unless they let you? What a ball of horseshit. No, you can't make smashup stealing other people's music. This is what you're crying about? That's not art, it's crap, and it lessens other people's intellectual property.
Leftyrock85 try creating your own material you lazy ass thief. Then when someone steals your shit you might have a different point of view. Lazy leftist a-hole. People want to give away the junk they create go ahead, but don't make it so no one has protection, that will squash incentives, you commi. If Disney didn't have copyright laws to protect them any shithead could make a Mickey Mouse cartoon or open a Disneyworld and then the people who actually created the content would receive nothing.
@crazyfreshman crazyfreshman? Are you still in college (your name)? It figures. Only intellectually vacant, liberal educated wannabees have such absurd ideas. You're either a college freshman, or more likely a high school freshman.
@spec24 Disney built the vast majority of its empire by taking advantage of stories in the public domain; stories written by others. Disney capitalized on others' work, no doubt, but they do not want to extend the same benefit to others that they have received. Instead they lobby for protection of their own "stolen" (to use your vocabulary) works, thereby kicking out the ladder from underneath future creators.
You're obviously trolling, but I couldn't help myself.
@crazyfreshman yes, obviously by posing comments on-topic I am trolling. You couldn't help yourself 'cause you're an imbecile, So using things in the public domain is stealing intellectual property? You're obviously a genius and have thought this through quite well. It may come as a shock to your tiny little brain but we have had copyright laws since the country was founded and before. Yes, those laws have changed. Good. Creators should keep the rights to their works as long as possible.
@spec24 No, I correctly identified you as a troll for posting inflammatory (1), controversial (2), insulting (3) comments.
Obvious troll is obvious. Keep posting copyright monopolist comments on a thread for a Doctorow video. Oh, and keep up the insults; you're earning your troll badge.
@crazyfreshman Oh no, boo hoo. Crazyfreshman is calling me a troll. I see you rushed right to wiki to get your troll definition. Of course I'll insult you, you're an idiot. And your problem with the supposed lobbying from Disney is what? The laws passed didn't just protect Disney, they protect everyone who has created something. A concept unavailable to a loser like yourself. Typical though, unable to address any points that I made and instead just come out with:get out of here you troll
@crazyfreshman Copyright monopolist comments? Wow are you stupid. No one has a "monopoly" on copyrights, genius. We all have rights to OUR own creations - if you want to be dishonest and call that a monopoly of some sort your welcome to your delusion. But of course, you're a waste of comments or anyone's time. I can't believe I've wasted some of mine on a dolt like you. Good luck with your whining, crying life. Good luck with your public service job, shithead.
@spec24 I will indulge you a reply to a few of your recent comments, but only in the hopes that this exchange provides me practice for more meaningful, less insulting debates in the future.
1) Copyright is absolutely and indisputably a government-enforced monopoly, and it gives the right to exclude others from multiple otherwise-legal behaviors. Law varies by country, but it usually confers at least exclusive rights to redistribute and replicate.
3) If you cannot see the hypocrisy exhibited by corporations like Disney in benefiting from the public domain (I agree, the public domain is available to you and me as well), and then doing everything they can to prevent the work they create from becoming part of the public domain, then I think you may be beyond help, or too upset to see rationally at least.
4) CTEA pulled works out of the public domain. Please explain to me how that benefits the dead authors of said works.
@crazyfreshman You want to take things from the public domain and make money off it you can too - I noticed you haven't - you must be filled with creativity. Again, no one is keeping anyone who wants to release their shit into the public domain from doing it so you're bitching about what? People having the sole right to their own creations? You're an ass, and an uneducated one at that. Take you feel-good stupidity and shove it. Poor baby, can't steal other people's work and make a profit.

I really enjoyed how Cory interjected an anecdote about blacksmiths into his talk. I somewhat wonder how many blacksmiths Cory has come in contact with over his lifetime (?)
Otherwise a very long and unfruitful talk by just another "reality hacker" among "reality hackers"

More bullshit that artists don't create art for financial reasons. That's a lie.

People buy songs in urines be aide it's not illegal. There are still some people left who care about laws. Oh yeah - and no viruses.

This clown is missing a critical point. In a free society no one is forced to buy any of the crap he mentions.

Props for keeping such close watch on a video of this age, though.
