i found a web hosting webclo.com i've bought a hosting plan with them and they made a fully instalation of Joomla for me, my site is working perfect now
I like to have a website, my first question is, to create site with joomla is free or must pay to have the server, or can I create a server here at the pc that I have. I have not idea at all of these things, can you give me a brief explanation please.
Hi Alex, Your tutorials are great they have help me out so many times.
I was wondering thought if you know how to install Joomla into a parralle plesk cpanel, I have searched everywhere for instructions with no luck.
Any help would be so appreciated, I have installed all my joomla sites from your step by step videos, they way you explain things is a breeze to follow.
Hi Alex, your tutorials have helped me so much just want to say thankyou, I was wondering though, I have to use joomla on a new site but its done in Parralles plesk cpanel and I cant find anything anywhere on how to install it, wondering if you know and if you could do a similar video on how to install it on that.
Man this is strange, I done exactly what you said and it went to Joomla for the first phase, then I deleted the installation file as described , now all I get on my page is
"No configuration file found and no installation code available. Exiting..."
And there appears nothing I can do about it... any help would be much appreciated...
at 4:26 I added an annotation regarding this. Sorry, but I think you will have to reinstall. The Joomla dev team I think was a little careless about this and give people the impression that they should delete the installation folder before they should.
Note : this video is awesome but if someone face a problem after installation because he removed the installation first .. so you can first click on admin and then message will tell you that you have to remove it now then like here .. and it's working also .. and this is the way how i installed the joomla .. and again man your video is great and helpful and i have watched a lot of videos and this was the best of the best .. keep it up .
I use camtasia studio, but I do the blue-screen/green-screen in adobe after effects. camtasia lets you do a screen cap and webcam recording at the same time.
I keep meaning to more vids and I will soon, just been busy at a new job. I'll likely to community builder first and then virtuemart.
Hello and thanks for creating a superb tutorial. I was able to go through your two part series on installing Joomla 1.5 and had my site up in the time it took me to complete your video. I literally just learned about Joomla less than a week ago. Thank you for the good work.
Alex this is the best tutorial that can be found online. It's so analytical.. Just great job! Still I am facing a problem with the installation. I succesfully uploaded joomla in public_html and unziped it however when i get in my site I only see a message from my host instead of the installer... I followed the process exactly as you described.
if you haven't figured it out yet, there is a likely a file already in public_html that is obscuring joomla's index.php file. It is likely called index.htm or index.html or welcome.html, etc. Simply rename this file (or remove it if you are sure you don't need it).
I've removed these 4 folders accidentally (phpBB3, protected, stuff and cgi-bin). where can i find it again and upload it in public_html? Did I realy need these files?
cgi-bin was prob already there and if you don't know what it is then you are certainly not using it (yes, it IS meaningful to some people, but cgi users know exactly what this folder is for).
The other 3...well...ummm...I think you have realized by now that they are YOUR content.
pbpbb3 looks to me to be a phpbb3 installation. phpbb3 needs an index.php just like joomla does which is why joomla and phpbb can NOT be in the same place (eg. root) without a little tweaking.
The other 2 look to be your content. I hope you didn't have anything important in them that wasn't backed up. I recommend to people to pretty much never outright delete anything unless you are 100% sure you know what you are deleting because there is NO way to get it back (shy of calling your host and begging and possibly having to pay).
Hey Alex, I am thinking of using joomla 1.5 for my uni project. I'm quite new to it. Well I tried installing joomla but was getting an error message saying I can't connect to database. Also...you were talking about cpanel...I'd like to have a cpanel but can't seem to fine a free webspace..can you help me on this? Thanks mate Rey
The Joomla zip file didnt work for me - still cant upload onto CPanel. But i downloaded the Joomla tar file and that works just fine - I can upload that. Guess its the way i compress the unzipped Joomla file before i upload it on Cpanel. (Macbook automatically unzips my downloaded Joomla zip file)
excellent, thx for letting me know. this is a strange little bug that i haven't heard of before. i should have recommended trying the tar. uploading via ftp should have worked as well.
Thanks Alex. The Joomla zip download didnt work for me. I still cant upload it onto Cpanel. But when i tried the Joomla Stable_Full_Package.tar, that works just fine. I guess its the way i compress the Joomla file with my macbook, after macbook automatically extract my downloaded Joomla.
hi alex hope you could help me with my problem. I have use fantastico to install joomla but when i try to check for my website it only direct me to namecheap not to joomla.. i bought my domain, btw i use addora for webhosting and Im kinda lost now don't know what to do.
use ftp to upload the joomla zip, then use cpanel only to unzip. cpanel SHOULD be able to upload it, but your host might have file size limits, so just use ftp.
I want to have my site as a test to be allowed to create a better site on my server, but now I'm trying to use my laptop as a server with ubuntu 9.04 descktop edition
you have something better to help me, like msn or something?I have mine, if you want.
So you can teach me online while tell me what to do, use wireles router
you should get it from the host of your website for example mine is 000webhost and once you log in you click on your account and it pops up with cpanel
I use name cheap Basic at $2.91/month, 2 year plan: * 5GB space * 250GB transfer * 50 email accounts * 15 MySQL databases * 1 hosted domain * no parked domains * 15 subdomains * 5 FTP users * All the features of Email Only
5GB is a lot, unless you are streaming video,in which case any host will shut your site if you are on their basic plan very quickly.
Comparable Godaddy will cost:
2 year plan: 10 GB Space, 300 GB Transfer, $4.50/mo
The big difference between the 2 is that namecheap uses cPanel which has lots of cool features whereas godaddy uses it's own custom interface which is a real pain to work with/navigate through.
One of the only things i like more about godaddy is that its more expensive deluxe plan allows for unlimited domain hosting whereas namecheap is capped at 20 for its pro hosting, which is a big issue if anyone planned to make websites and host professionally.
can you... or anyone else... tell me anything about namecheap, i want to make a website with it, but how much bandwidth and space does it have and can i use html on it?
I extracted joomla to publichtp, just like you did. But it cant be uploaded unles I do it in ftp. But thats not the problem, the problem is, nothing happens when I go to my domain. Any tip will be appreciated. Thanks for this great video.
excellent tutorial, but can you make public the old one? how to install Joomla on a FREE 000webhost website... i'll be grateful all my live! pleeeeeaaaseee
earlier this year 000webhost imposed a file quota of 2000 files (joomla has about 4000) so it want possible to do anymore, which is why i made the vids private. BUT some people have told me it works again. I just haven't had time to verify. I fyou send me a friend request I will add you to the private list so you can see them. Then you can try for yourself and let me know.
i have used the site restore option to unzip my site files in the root of my 000webhost account. it works only if your ok with starting fresh and eracing all the old content in the root. Good to experiment with.
Great video. thank you very much. One question: I cannot see my index as yours shown on the video. I check there is no other index file besides index.php. I don't know why it did not show. What could be the reason?
The thing is, you need a cpanel which supports to extract a zip file. Mine doesn't unfortunately. Also some file managers support only Internet Explorer, which is how Linux-users are excluded...
Yes, while cPanel is a product, your host has the ability to turn on/off specific features. I am AMAZED though that your host has disabled zip extraction as this I deem to be VERY rare. And if your host uses a control panel other than cPanel that is IE only, time to get a new host.
Alex you saved me hours of frustration. Please keep the Joomla videos coming. I am creating my first Joomla website and your videos have helped me tremendously.
...:the Joomla files as in the video (but, again, not to the right in File manager) and a MacOSx folder. I go to the site and there is still the standard holding page from namecheap.
I then tried the fantastico option (after deleting the previous attempts from my server) just to see if I could get the Joomla standard site. Now all the joomla files ARE in the right hand field of the file manager, but same story on the domain: the namecheap holding page. Any ideas? Is my mac to blame.
Excellent video! I did however get stuck. I did everything manually and got to the point where I expanded the zip drive. (the zip was called Joomla_1.zip which I found strange since I dwnld the latest 1.5 version) I can see all the files in the public folder but not to the right in the file manager I am doing all of this on a Mac and when I unzipped, I got two sets of seemingly identical files in two folders:
That's simply not true. Some providers dont have an autoinstaller. When they do, it's often not the most recent version (eg. 1.0.15 joomla and not 1.5). Also, upgrading an autoinstalled web app is harder than upgrading a manually installed one. Autoinstallers also name the db/admin for you. Also, doing it yourself is gratifying: you learn more and can redo it anywhere without depending on an autoinstaller.
If you expect to be able to troubleshoot problems as they arise with your instance (and problems WILL arise), you had better be sure you understand how your installation works. Anyone at all serious about their site should NOT be using an autoinstaller.
The other thing you can do if you dont want to use an ftp client is unzip joomla to your computer, then select half the files and folders , right click and "add to archive" (select "zip" if you have more than 1 option). Then select the other half of the files and folders and do the same (give a different name). Then use cpanel to transfer both zips and extract.
Yes i see some providers have a 5mb file size limit, so you will HAVE to split up the zip if this is the case. Also, make sure you have MYSQL support before you install; most providers that cap file at 5mb dont have mysql either.
I use the cheapest package with namecheap, and the cheapest with godaddy as well. On either one you can install Joomla without having to split up the zip. You will only ever have to split up the zip on some of the free hosts.
Are you on namecheap? Namecheap allowsmore than 5mb. If you are on another provider you will have to ftp the joomla package. Go into cpanel>files>ftp accounts and create an ftp account if you dont already have one.
Then download an ftp client. i recommend core ftp (free). Make an account in the ftp client that matches the ftp account you make in cpanel. For "Host/IP/URL" in the ftp client DO NOT add "ftp" (for example,i set that value to "alexwestconsulting . com"). Now simply connect to your hosted site and copy the zip over. Continue with this tutorial back in cpanel at the point where file has been transferred.

1. Would you be able to provide a tutorial on installing Virtuemart onto Joomla through the CPanel interface?

Thanks again. Please don't ever delete this video - We can use it as a re-usable prompt sheet for future project installations.

thats dumb just go to auto installer and install Joomla or Wordpress or Simple Machines
jbw1294 3 years ago

Can you tell me which webhosting package from namecheap we should use to upload joomla without splitting the zip?
thanks

I use the cheapest package with namecheap, and the cheapest with godaddy as well. On either one you can install Joomla without having to split up the zip. You will only ever have to split up the zip on some of the free hosts.

Are you on namecheap? Namecheap allowsmore than 5mb. If you are on another provider you will have to ftp the joomla package. Go into cpanel>files>ftp accounts and create an ftp account if you dont already have one.
alexwestconsulting 3 years ago
Then download an ftp client. i recommend core ftp (free). Make an account in the ftp client that matches the ftp account you make in cpanel. For "Host/IP/URL" in the ftp client DO NOT add "ftp" (for example,i set that value to "alexwestconsulting . com"). Now simply connect to your hosted site and copy the zip over. Continue with this tutorial back in cpanel at the point where file has been transferred.
