  • Always liked Roy Hamilton. His version of "Unchained Melody" is the one I think stands out among the many. As for "Ebb Tide," I have to give the title to Lenny Welch.

  • This was recorded by several artists, but his version is the best.

  • great voice love this version

  • I was 7 in1955 when i fell in love with this song

  • Maravilha, que voz!!!!!!!

  • To compliment you for sharing this splendid performance by Roy Hamilton

So glad to find his recording of 'Ebb Tide' among your channel contents.

A huge tribute of thanks to you ...

  • Incredible voice, but this song never moved me.

  • The way this song builds is just amazing, some of Roy's best vocal work.

  • one of my pops' favorite singers of all time. had all of his lps. was blessed to find this music again in cd form several years ago. he was aptly named the 'man with the golden voice'. tragic that he died from throat cancer i believe

  • 2011 and still the greatest song ever....

  • I was six years old when this version came out. I loved it because the beginning sounded like a motion picture to me; the rolling piano always reminded me of ocean waves and the violins moonlight on the water, then Roy Hamilton's voice-put it all together and I was overwhelmed every time this song came on the radio. Listening to it now reminds me of how much I loved music back then and still do. Great memories! Thanks for the upload.

  • I've been trawling for 'rat pack' stuff...this is pay dirt!

  • He never received the popularity and professional accolates that he was entitled too. A hidden talent until people like us brought him back into our lives.

  • Other than "Don't Let Go", I never realized this guy had a set of pipes for these incredible ballads......just blew me away!!

  • Nobody has ever sang this song like Roy.

  • This song is epic. Im 15 and I wish that music still had this quality.

  • I got his autograph when I was a kid. Great voice!

  • note how much Roy sounds lie Elvis! No mistake about it, check out "cracking up over you " on R.C.A. its adead ringer for Elvis ,apparently he was a major influence on Elvis.

  • Brillent **** fantastic singer fablous song

    Thanks Judie for sharing

  • A remarkably clear and haunting voice backed with impeccable orchestration. The versatile Roy Hamilton had equal ease with the uptempo (Don't Let Go, You Can Have Her) as well as the ballad (Ebb Tide, Unchained Melody, You'll Never Walk Alone)

  • I had forgotten what a wonderful voice he had.Thank you so much.

  • @mcoble84 what a great voice i wish i had his voice

  • First time I've heard this version of "Ebb Tide" and, man, Roy Hamilton just sung the hell out of this song.

  • WOW! I've always loved this song and have heard many versions, but Roy's has blown me away! It's second only to The Three Degrees' version. Thank you for making this video and introducing me to Roy!

  • Very nice, very nice in deed. Arthur Prysock and Jimmy Roselli have great versions also.

  • Heard all versions and Roy Hamilton hit it dead on with lots of emotion and feelings.

    -Vince

  • I believed that until I heard Arthur Prysock's. He actually tops Roy's! And I LOVE Roy's. It was one of his biggest hits. But Prysock does this tune MUCH justice. Check out Prysocks's

  • @BlueAvenueLtd ..Got that right! Beautiful! The "Blue Eyed Devils of Soul" Righteous Bros did a good job also..But Roy Hamilton version is the best!!!!

  • Cherished and treasured.

  • this is Very Pretty Fegen, thank you...

  • Este é um cantor que tem voz, não preciza comer o microfone para cantar e nen de recursos eletrônicos. Amelodia é linda

  • For years I told people of Unchained Melody and in my pre-teen days of a man by the name of Roy Hamilton and to my surprise, they had not heard of him. They thought the Righteous Brothers was the first. I had the opportunity to see Roy a few times.

  • Tom Jones (when in better voice than now) did a superb version which is also here on youtube. Tom Jones has spoken highly of Roy Hamilton's influence as has P.J. Proby.

  • Presley owed him alot when it came to ballad singing. It's so nice to hear this again. The best version ever.

  • Did Elvis sing the "ebb tide" & if so what album is it on. I agree that this one is the best version,

  • @rockhouse5 I'm not aware of an Elvis version of this song although it might be that it hasn't surfaced yet. The Righteous Bros, Matt Munro, Earl Grant & Lenny Welch all did versions that were influenced somewhat by Hamiltons.

Certainly Presley copied Roy's version of "Unchained Melody" . Certain photos are circulating of Roy & Elvis together.( i think one is on youtube) I think (although not certain) that the Righteous Bros had the biggest success with this song.

  • Thanks..

you are my kind of people..you know your music.. and yes, I agree that the Righteous Bros. have the most popular version of Unchained melody especially when it was used in the movie "Ghost"

    Have a healthy& prosperious 2010

  • @rockhouse5 Sorry, actually i meant the Righteous Bros had the most successful hit with "Ebb Tide"..it peaked at #5 in 1965. But then i suppose they were born to be successful. Roy Hamilton & Frankie Laine's version are among my faves.

  • What a fantastic voice!! The BEST Tenor in the World!!!! THANKS for the post.

  • Listen to Al Hibbler, Roy Hamilton, and Brook Benton in quick succession, Arthur Prysock, too, think about the cultural context in which their recordings were released, and you can't help but be amazed, and admiring, of how they all managed to place "soul" into the ears of the white record-buying public without any of them knowing it. By the time the '60's arrived, the public was ready.

  • @tuxguys Oh yes, what you say is absolutely true. Al Hibbler was fantastic too. I think maybe that the driving force/influence behind the singers like Hibbler & Roy Hamilton was Billy Eckstine.(IMHO)

  • I agree: Eckstine, and his contemporary Herb Jeffreys.

  • @tuxguys Oh yes," the singing prophet" Herb Jeffries is still alive today at 96 yrs old. Still sings apparently. His version of "Flamingo" was epic. You're right..he was the real influence.

  • A real crooner.

  • Great song by the great singer. Thanks for sharing.

  • So beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  • excelente intérprete! Saudades dos bons tempos...

  • What a magnificent voice. Love Roy

  • As I commented on Unchained Melody, I was 11 when I bought that recording in 55 and 10 when I bought Ebb Tide. I still have them. I took the bus to town and went to the 5 & 10 by myself! Hopefully some of today's young will discover this great man. This is GREAT SINGING.

  • i did

  • @CD122344 --Bravíssimo Roy Hamilton

  • i enjoy the way he does a song.

  • The only other great version of this song is by Lenny Welch...you can tell he was influenced by Roy...Lenny & Roy are 2 of the best singers of that time, and 2 of the most overlooked today.

  • The mental images that play in my head when he sings this ! Nobody else but Roy should sing Ebb Tide.

  • My husband and I fell in love while this song was playing 44 yrs ago. It is still our song.

  • I love that story- and what a song to bring you such a happy life together!

  • POETRY IN MOTION !!!

  • i saw him do this on the Ed Sullivan Show and it was as great as you hear it. Not polished, not refined, but just plain beautiful singing.

  • Isthere anybody who doesn't dig this awesome singer? The more you hear him the more you like him!

  • Roy Hamilton's version is my favorite!

  • What a voice. Why don't singers, black or white, try to emulate this style. How romantic. Still would be a big hit today.

  • Roy Hamilton is one who song those standard first. Never got his dues. He was the first. When the other singer were kids.

  • he should have been paid millions, he was the one who taught the king elvis presley how to sing.. elvis sounds just like him

  • So Beautiful!!!

  • no wonder this was one of elvis' favorite singers!

  • Excellent rendition.

  • Roy Hamilton's version of Ebb Tide is outstanding. Thank you for posting.

  • I like him this is first time I've heard of Roy Hamilton, I'm heavily into Afro-American crooners like Johnny Hartman, Arthur Prysock, Al Hibbler. If there any more I should listen someone hit me up!

  • Happyorganist, One man I think you'll really enjoy listening to is Joe Williams. His "Where are You?" tears me up (the first time I heard it, I had just broken up with my fiancee). He recorded lots of ballads but plenty of up-tempo songs too. Also you might like Jimmy Rushing, Joe's predecessor with the Count Basie band. He was bluesy, yet melodious. And by all means listen to the great Billy Eckstine, who is very similar to Arthur Prysock. Let me know what you think!

  • You haven't lied about Roy Hamilton

  • Billy Eckstine is phenomenal....ever hear him sing Bewildered?

  • I've heard a lot of his songs but I don't remember that one---I'll have to check it out, thanks!

  • Don't forget Johnny Mathis.

  • How 'bout Lenny Welch? He did "Since I Fell For You"; "Ebb Tide" from the film 'Sweet Bird Of Youth' and "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do".

  • Willie Bobo is not thought of as a crooner, but listen to his version of Dindi and I

    think you will be delighted.

  • I heard Roys version of I BELIEVE ... it was amazing. But, I cant find it here on You Tube. He had such depth to his voice .... you can see why Elvis was inspired by him.

  • his version is the best. i'm surpise he did have greater success than he did. it just goes to show you that you need more than a great voice. there are so many variables involved in making a successful and longlasting singing career.

  • Nancy Wilson's version is wonderful!!!!.

  • I sure wish some moviemaker of real stature would put this song - and this particular version - in a movie (as was done with the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody"). That would introduce this gentleman - and this great performance - to all of the music fans who are missing out on a great voice.

  • So long ago.so many memories. The 50's were the best time to be young and in love..The songs were wonderful. Beautiful job.

  • And now a song.....from a man who used to entertain so many folks down in Greensboro and in Charlotte...Mr. Roy Hamilton. Let's dedicate this to Ron and Sue, and also for Lacey and the new lady he's been sporting on his arm lately, and for all you folks in love.

Talking about belly-rubbing at the beach....on the Carolina shore.

  • I still have single records and albums

I bought by Roy Hamilton. I always

appreciated the way he sang. His style

    was different and unique.

  • @Fegen

Dear fegen... i thank you for this vid too...the song i like very much...both... in instrumental version and vocal...this rendition is unknown for me...very good... and enjoyable!

Have a great day and thanks for all your lovely sharing...cheers...Judie

  • To me the best version of this song. Love the mix of his gospel and classical training.

  • lovely

  • Nice, but to my opinion, nobody can surpass the "Ebb tide" version by Mina !

(It is here on Youtube! Please try!)

  • Just listened to it, and nope. IMO her voice doesn't have the same clarity and power as Roy Hamilton's does, plus on some of the high notes her voice sounds a bit nasally.

  • Just listened to it, and nope. IMO her voice doesn't have the same clarity and power as Roy Hamilton's does, plus on some of the high notes her voice sounds a bit nasally.

  • Don't forget the version of Tony Williams of THE PLATTERS. In my opinion better than any others.

  • Roy's version will never be surpassed by any other singer.

  • Got any other Roy Hamilton??

  • Wow, what a voice!!!

  • Yes, amazing what the human voice is capable of being able to do, and if you have a singing voice that is a gift from God, it sounds like Roy Hamiltons.

  • Wow, thank you for giving me back my youth .. great song.

  • One of my favorite songs and singers from

    the 1950s.

  • This is from the 50's.Haven't heard it simce I was in the Navy 1957 -1961 Youtube is a fantastic music source.

  • hope u dont find this offensive but i do hope that the older generations can pass down this real music to my generation (16 yr old)

because this is an AMAZING piece of music...so much feeling

  • Its all on here the great classics, some by the originals, like the Four Aces,The Diamonds,

The Righteous Brothers, the Four Seasons,Santo & Johnny, Roy Orbison.....Try some on and see how you like them.
