the only thing that's keeping me from using kde is the awfull network manager it usually comes with in kde distros. i have 4 computers with wifi cards and none of them work with the k network manager :P
Weird i had always impression that GNOME/GTK applications are sooo slow compared to KDE/QT. I will stick with KDE 4.4. Series 4 seems usable now. Also imho GNOME looks much prettier expecially this theme. Cheers.
Interesting, but flawed. time is not a good way to measure how quickly gui programs start, for example, you can see the result of the time command before nautilus even appears.
You can set the KDE animations to fast, faster or instant and they won't appear to be so slow. The compiz animation does a good job of making it look quick.
The reason the kinfocenter takes so long to open in Gnome is it has to load all of the kde libraries. Try opening nautilus while in KDE... it will be quite slow.
If it is as you say about Nautilus, KDE should preload an instance of Dolphin on boot. It's requested at KDE Brainstorm, but it still doesn't enabled. It it not come preloaded, is a KDE issue.
Anyway, the comparison is entirely valid. It is the time to load the applications by default in both desktops.
I didn't had installed Epiphany in this computer at the moment of the test, but also loads much faster than Konqueror. And I can attest that Epiphany does not come pre-loaded into memory. You can try yourself it if you don't believe me.
Hey anyway I love kde 4 apps, especially Dolphin over Nautilus, lol. Dolphin's loading seems snappier to me. I always have Nautilus blinking. One more thing I notice is that resizing KDE apps feels much faster outside KDE. Maybe its Plasma that slows everything down.
I have the same experience as you. KDE 4 has always been lagging on my computer, but I don't understand why some people claim it feels faster than GNOME or even KDE 3.5 on their machines. Looks like this can differ a lot on different hardwares...
Or maybe you're a Gnome fanboy. I think Gnome is faster than KDE, but saying KDE lags in every machine you tested it it's just a fanboy exageration to me. I use Kubuntu 9.10 and it doesn't lag at all in my Sempron 3000 single core. FYI: I used gnome also and it's faster than KDE in my machine.
I am only a KDE lover who is tired of being forced to use GNOME because the bad (slow, buggy and feature-missing) KDE 4.X, who wants to get things back to normal.
These videos are for constructive criticism and a way of telling developers that something is wrong in KDE 4 and it is not as wonderful as eye-candy.
no entiendo tu comparación...

yeah Gnome is more consistent. It is so consistent that it still uses the Windows 3.1 top bar. Gnome is damn ugly, but who cares?

If you have reasonably powerful computer, both GNOME and KDE run fast enough. I like GNOME because I find it more usable and consistent design wise.

that was not a fair comparation, you need to preload kde4 as you did it with gnome

... or also you can view in the videos the difference betwen the load of Konsole and the load of GNOME Terminal.

I also prefer KDE apps over GNOME apps, they are more powerful.

I test it in five different computers, with ATI/NVIDIA/Intel video cards, with Ubuntu 9.10 and openSUSE 11.2, and KDE 4 never goes faster than GNOME.
About "some people", I think that "some people" = "ultra-fanboys".

@luchoben i'm using an old Pentium 4 machine and I don't notice much difference between Gnome and KDE speedwise tbh. KDE seems just as fast to me
