@SavageDutchman almost all of the notes played here are in diminished 6th(g#--b-d-f)just learn the pattern it's symmetrical.it's simple.and the scales in manouche i think are simple too, just use arpeggios and 6th arpeggios (1-3-5-6) on the chords. and small notes for joining the chords if u want to get fancy :))
i'd love it if it were a little more melodic. actually django wasn't so restrictive, he was more melodic, but the guys that "imitate" him are mostly technique inclined :/
Great stuff, but I can't figure out why they keep making guitar lesson clips this way? It should be rotated 180 degrees, THEN it could be of some use, right? So, there's an idea. I will download clips, and rotate them in vdub, he, he...
I'm trying to figure out how to recreate this sound without buying a $2000 guitar, I understand that i can't but i want to do the best i can, would a crappy yamaha classical with gypsy jazz string work?
@Tube7686 i know how you feel, but take a look at some of the old gypsy jazz videos and see what half of them are playing.. Trash, don't worry about the guitar for now, when you can play it right the gypsy guitar will just give you that little extra.
and a lot of reststrokes, which is specialy hard when playing really fast. but just like dmmc1043 says, dont get obsessed with the rules, when it sounds good its good
when you used to playing this style you actually don;t think about the picking no more. you use downstroke automaticaly when changing string. On the same string you use automaticaly alternate picking (slower more downstrokes becus of the punch). no matter how fast you play when its in your system it all goes automatic.
Stochelo says that when he plays slow he don't pick the same way. Well that's to bad stoch. Your my favorite player but what is the use of this DVD then if I can't see want kind of picking you use?
that's the point: a lot of people obsess over the rules of gypsy picking, when in fact there aren't as many as one would think. When you play slow or fast, you change the picking to get the best tone possible... when you play slow you use more downstrokes, when you play fast, you use a bit more alternate picking but still try to use downstrokes at key points
@dmmc1043 I understand what you are saying Dennis thanks for that.
But is it true that I can see Stochelo don't use much Alernate picking?
Is it true that when Stochelo plays fast, he always uses a downstroke if he is going to a new string in a certain lick? (when he plays from low to high strings ofcourse)
well, when he plays fast, he'll definitely use more upstrokes than usual... but yes every time he changes strings he starts with a downstroke... I've NEVER seen him do otherwise!!! However, his little brother Mozes plays some of the same lines as Stochelo, and he does a few phraseswith upstrokes... so you see, in the end, it's the swing and tone that matters, they both have fantastic tone and both can play very fast...
@dmmc1043 Yes that's true. I think a guy like Adrien Moignard uses al ot of alternate picking. That's sounds cool too. But I think it is good to experiment some styles of picking. Thanks for the info anyway great DVD.
@Hucho It means the pick follows a different path than alternate picking.
In alternate picking when picking different string it goes (three note per string pattern): "up down up" "down up down" "up down up" "down up down" "up down up" "down up down"
In economy same pattern goes like this: "down up down" "down up down" "down up down" "down up down" "down up down" "down up down"
The pick follows a continuum movement when crossing strings
@665vizinhodabesta No actually, gypsy picking is very different from economy picking à la Frank Gambale. With gypsy reststrokes, the rule is, each time you switch string you use a downstroke, even when you go up towards lower strings. This is how you get the distinct gypsy "attack" sound. It's a bit similar to "oud" playing.
thank you

Did that picking style come from the fact that django only had two mobile fingers or was it around before him?
