Qui plus est l'Empire qu'il a créé était somme toute différent d'une monarchie. C'est lui à qui nous devons la base du code civil Français.

@Mujangga C'est le sénat de la république qui a proposé à Napoléon de devenir Empreur pour ainsi stabiliser définitivement le régime et ainsi sauvegarder la république et donc les acquis de la révolution .Napoléon a ensuite fait un plébiscite au peuple français pour savoir si il voulait de lui en tant qu'empereur et c'est derniers ont approuvé à 3 572 000 voix contre 2 572 non , donc tu vois rien avoir avec tes rois de droit divin élue par dieu.

NapoleonCalland's interpretation of history is correct. Almost all of the history of Napoleon written in English is biased against him.

Nap was flawed, of course, as are all human beings. However, the anti-Nap bias in the English history of him renders this history inaccurate. Thanks to NapoleonCalland for setting the record straight.

On a lighter note, I have been surprised by the content of a book I found in a french library recently.

Considering Napoléon founded so much that is considered beneficial in France today,

it was not very supportive of 'The Great Man' and I find it difficult, amongst

'ordinary french people' to get a straight answer to 'was he good or bad?'

Obviously, more reading and seeking to be undertaken!

Let's see if I've got this right. This dictator takes a failed, blood soaked revolution and turns it into a failed, blood soaked world war. He leaves a half a million French "citizens" to die in Russia, hesitates in moving his artilery into place at Waterloo allowing the Prussians to join up with the English, and utimately is resonsible for millions of deaths. Great tribute. When is the Hitler tribute coming out?

As for the Hitler comparison, Ben Weider (google him) and many other Jews who honour the Emperor’s memory because of his role in their emancipation find that kind of comment personally insulting. Hitler wasn’t in the front line, nor did he insist on wounded enemy soldiers being tended to as well as wounded in his own forces. And as mentioned above, their policies on “minorities” aren’t comparable.

His first act as head of state is to ask for peace, but the war party (a hard core of the "Tory" party) refuse peace with France until Britain's allies on the continent are either knocked out or ally with France. This brief peace is ended when the same group of Englishmen refuse to carry out the treaty and attack French merchant shipping and the Navy.

@ChampagneCraig You should try reading. Napoleon was a great man who believed strongly in civil rights, women's rights, the emancipation of surfs, education, and law reform. He never once started a war; all of his campaigns were undertaken in self defense after peace agreements had been broken by Russia, Austria, Prussia, or Britain. Don't use your ignorance to condemn others.

C'était le chant le plus populaire dans l'armée française de 1791 à 1815. Il a fait faire des milliers de km a des millliers de soldats. Les soldats etaient moins niais que certains aimeraient le faire croire. Une bonne orchestration transforme une bluette en une redoutable machine a faire marcher... d'ailleurs empire veut dire Etat et pas Empire (monarchie) comme le mot allemand Reich

Surtout par contraste avec l'agressivité des paroles! Ça colle pas du tout. "Tremblez tyrans, vous allez expier vos forfaits... Marchez avec nous au combat... Jurons une guerre mortelle..." Tout ça chanté sur l'air d'une romance sentimentale poudrée façon "le Devin du Village"...

Passablement ridicule. On comprend sans peine que cet hymne n'ait pas eu le même écho que la Marseillaise...

Puis il n'a été hymne d'Empire que de 1804 à 1815 .

Parce qu'ils ont mis La Marseillaise à la place... Ils préfèrent avec l'hémoglobine... "Qu'un sang impur abreuve nos sillons", plutôt que d'affirmer l'amour de l'Autre en disant "Les hommes libres sont Français"!
