Thank you for this review. I wan't a better micro for my videos and for Skype etc. I can't invest much money, so this gomic is..yeah, it seems to be ok, for this price. Thanks :)
I'm not sure if anyone knows anything about the Blue Snowball microphone, but I'm trying to decide between that and this Samson Go Mic. I cannot choose between the two, and am wondering which, overall has the best sound quality.
Great Review! But much interesting is the REAL setup you use. I mean The great darkgrey studiomic and all the equipment. Can you please tell me more about your setup? Which mic, preamp, channelstrip or comressor eq whatever. From In to Output. Because it sounds pretty well recorded =)
This was recorded 'dry', since it's a USB device. Our processing chain for pro XLR mics ONLY, include Aphex 230s and an Aphex 2020MkIII. ...for this video, all processing was bypassed and the mic was plugged directly into USB.
A few things to consider:
* The recording was done in a sound dampened studio
* I did record low (about -12db) and then normalized to avoid clipping
These things aside, no processing, eq or altering was done.
Would the GoMic be okay for aspiring (but amateur) singers/songwriters? I know there are better ones, but I really can't afford much - do you think it would be worth it, or should I wait a while until I can afford a better one?
I'm an aspiring voice actress and singer and i have been looking at this mic and and the blue snowball mic to help get me started. Would you recommend this mic for said uses?
@NewMediaGear I've had the Snowball and sold it again. It has a bump in the mid-range that gives it a metallic unpleasant sound. It is also a bit noisy. The Rode Podcaster is a wonderful USB mic and has a mic pre amp as well.
This little Go Mic sounds good though! (judging from the video)
You should not hear hissing or noise while monitoring, unless in a noisy environment.
Check your computers mixer settings for the mic. If the input is too low or high, it can be a problem. If Windows, check for 'mic boost' and try it both ways from the mixer.
Record a sample. Can you hear the same hiss on the recording or just when you're monitoring? If you only hear it during monitoring and not recording, there may be a hardware problem.
@NewMediaGear I see, it's partly my Levels on my computer, the quality of my headphones (Ipod earphones) and background noise....Problem solved, thanks very much!
I have a good quality laptop I recently purchased, and you would think the microphone in it would be half way decent, but it sounds horrible. I need this microphone, it sounds like another winner. Thanks Mark, you always have a knack of finding a way of spending my money!
@laurat1701 do people on the other end hear you fine and clear as if you just recorded with the mic and not be in a long distance call from the internet? and do they hear any background noise at ll? cause that's really important to me, i just want to have a nice skype call with crystal clear sound and no background noise
A major thing to consider is the price and application. The bigger mic is roughly 4 times the cost of the GoMic, and runs through broadcast processing.
The GoMic is perfect for office Skype calls, but definitely not a studio replacement.
Hey Mark...thanks for the review! I had seen this mic on a few other sites and thought it was something to look into for my girlfriend's laptop, seeing as her current built-in mic is pretty useless! And now because of your great review, she's getting yet another b-day present! ;-)

@PurBakVideo2
No auto-tune used in any of our production. ...mostly because we don't have one in the studio.

Hi,

SuziScandalous 1 year ago
@SuziScandalous
The GoMic is a great add-on to use as an alternative to your laptops built-in microphone.
Having said that and having a choice between the 2 - I would start off with the Snowball. It has a higher quality element.
...just my opinions, but I hope it helps!

@MrSixFive
I've tried built-in microphones on several different high-end Core i7 laptops. They were all terrible! My 2 year old Core Duo sounded much better.
Anyway - I put the GoMic on a new laptop (Skype) and immediately the other party commented on how much better it sounded.
Thanks for the comment!
