How does William Peterson trump so many tough contenders

Peterson was my top choice but I didn't expect him to win in the end, aware that no one else would vote for him. In the end the other nominiees split the vote so much that no one earned enough to overtake Peterson. So having so many tough contenders is what won Peterson the prize.
He didnt have as good an episode as any of the other contenders this past year, but each week he gave such a subtlely layered performance that I thought he was the years best. imo he's the most underated actor on tv
