  • but this has two courses tuned in octave, a mandocello`s courses are tuned in unison...

  • Irish bouzouki has flat back. I think that was more for a key word incase of a search.

  • bouzouki and mandocello are the same instrument. bouzouki has curved back, mandocello has straight back,

  • with your eyes closed while listening to this song your soul flies :)

  • ??? there's no such thing as a mandocello bouzouki. There are two different instruments

  • very nice!!! Like it! but how is the tuning uf his bouzouki? i want to play this song too^^

  • Does anyone here know the name of this tune?

  • Très chouette mélodie !! Phalaïna

  • Very pretty song...

  • Lame. He's only playing the accompaniment.

  • @Lithoxene lol. really man?

he is playing all of the parts. He recorded over himself.

  • @odeamusic

Then he chose to film the less difficult, less interesting part.

  • The two parts in wich you can only see his finger, thats the melody/solo track

The part in wich you can see him strumming is the rythm track

So there are two tracks in this video playing along with each other: rythm and melody just like the guitars in a band: a rythm guitar and a solo guitar

  • Strange video - the notes don't appear to follow the fingering? Some of the melody is being played while the fingers hold a chord, and there's no plucking / fingering to follow the accompaniment? It's almost as if there's another instrument off-screen playing along?

  • how you tune your irish bouzouki?

  • @pearljamania you use the pegs up top just like on a guitar ;)

  • This is awesome!

  • Is mandocello and bouzouki the same instrument? :S I'm really confused!

  • Those dislikes have to be mistakes....This is bad ass. :-)

  • Epic

  • I have been practicing this on my bouzoukie for a year know and i still don't know how he does it or how he tuned it. Some one please help! 13 year old in distress!!!

  • The sound reminds me a lot of a mountain (lap) dulcimer. Absolutely haunting and gorgeous. Here is my analysis of the tuning: It is a fourth above standard mandocello, with the bass side string pairs tuned in octaves, and the treble side string pairs tuned in unison; the same principle as a 12-string guitar. The tuning therefore would be in perfect fifths: F' F C'C GG DD bass to treble. ( ' indicates the high octave string). Those octave strings add a lot of fullness and brilliance.

  • it's wonderful. What tuning do you use?

    cheers Loz

  • This is absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much. I've sent it to all my friends.

  • beautiful

  • Very nice indeed!

  • GOOD TIMES SON!

  • Just mesmerizing! How beautiful...is there a CD available?

  • Beautiful!

    Thanks a lot

  • Très harmonieux !! Phalaïna

  • Another excellent song and playing... You are awesome... I have added all of your vids to a playlist I listen to like an album!! Thank You!!

  • Truly inspirational playing! Bravo!

  • Nice! How many tracks did you play?

  • this is a beautiful tune! was hoping it was traditional! I have a Hathway Mandolin and my father has a mandola. there is something about these instruments. They just have a sound i have never really heard on any other instruments.

  • Brilliant as usual, excellent muscianship ,your videos are my favourite

  • haha, the very beginning makes me think of the song Mr. Bojangles for some reason...

  • I love this piece. Very nicely done. Love your videos.

  • Unique and beutifull sounding instrument

  • NICE!!!

  • Thank you very much

  • voglio comprare un strumento come questo

  • makes me think of an irish man waking up on a sunday out in the country.

  • beautiful, congrats!

  • I love it, this tune always makes me think of a particular friend.

    absolutley beautiful playing

  • @MandobillyRocker - I love your combo name. lol Tells us quite who you are. (chuckle)

  • Very nice. .

    well done :o)

  • quiet and nice, love your serenity playing!

  • hoHA!

  • fantastic tune, dominique, i have the same bouzouki!

  • nice :) how did you get it ?

  • in hobgoblins, london, (the same model, not the same actual one), paul hathway is fantastic, go see his workshop if you have the time, google him and youll find his website

  • Nice playing! How are your experiences with Paul Hathway? I'm thinking of buying a mandocello (CGDA tuning) from him. Have you strung your instrument with thicker strings to make it a mandocello? Or do you use it always as a bouzouki? I would really like to hear your opinion about Paul Hathway's instruments...

  • Cheap (800 to 1000 €)

  • @ fenian08

aye i agree m8, dom has a certain flava :D

  • been checkn out bouzouki clips all day, keep coming back to yours, i can get enough , certainly the best in my opion. keep up the good work

  • loved it thanks, you have great timing

  • wow that sounds great.... I wonder if you could make a similar sound from a 12 string guitar

  • nice piece. great vid. thanks!

  • Very impressive, well done.

  • great composition, I am impressed

  • i don't recodnize the tune. is it an origonal?

  • Why don't you read the original comment :

"EYES CLOSED composition played on my "MANDOCELLO PAUL HATHWAY" this small assembly also makes it possible to view the accompaniment. Dominique Rivière "

  • What's the tuning ? is it GDAE or ADAD ?

  • last i knew a bouzouki was tuned EeAaDDGG

  • gdae, low to high

  • GDAE is the tuning for an octave mandola or the Irish Bouzouki (can be GDAD or GDAE).

The Mandocello is tuned lower in CGDA, just like a cello. It has huge strings.

  • wow!That's amazing!

  • awesome!

  • Thank you for the info about paul hathway, can i ask you if you have the notes for this song? If so please send it to me so i can learn it on mandolin and eventually when i get my mandocello i can play it.

    Thanks!

  • That sounds incredible. Might i ask where you can get a mandocello? I have searched on ebay and the selection is pretty low. I have decided to buy a mandocello because i already play violin guitar and mandolin, and it seems like a logical next step.

  • Wonderful playing and tune as well.

It sounds like a trad Scottish tune to me.

  • is it me, or is the neck on that mandolin as wide as a guitar? or is it a different sort of mandolin? im a guitarist, not a mandolin player, so excuse my ignorance please

  • It's a mandocello, which is larger and has a lower range than a mandolin. If you think of a mandolin as a kind of "plucked violin", the mandocello is a kind of "plucked cello".

  • I believe FedePolini's comment, "stupendo", means "stupendous" in English, not "stupid". Someone was too quick with the spam button.

  • there are two instruments in this recording. the other also sounds like a zouk..

  • Beautiful sound!

  • awesome instument, but can somebody tell me which part of it is cello?

  • It's tuned just like a cello :)

  • Cello is tuned CGDA. Octave mandolin is tunes GDAE...

  • ok my friend, this is not a cello or a mandocello, but it is an irish bouzouki tuned in mandocello (cello also) tuning. The mandocello is the mandolin family version of a cello. (just as mandolins are the equivilant of violins.) I am getting one.

  • I'm trying to decide if I love the Mandocello or Octave Mando more :)

  • my favorite mandocello video :]

  • im tinking of getting the eastman 805

  • 5 estrellas ¡¡¡

  • Sounds lovely.

  • this is one of my favorite instruments ever

  • Beautiful tones coming out of those instruments. I'm still beginning to learn on a cheap Rogue mandolin and being lazy about it.

  • awesome!!!! great ...

are there any tabs or chords for this???, i'd love to play it too!! ...

i just got an irish bouzouki yesterday and today I found this great tune ...

  • Fantastic, could you please tell me the name of this tune?

  • cathartic melody. that was excellent

  • Magnificant

  • Beautiful! Really nice!

  • extra tres bone travaile

  • This performance deserves the fame of all your others. I wish it went on for hours. Tks Dom.

  • Awesome! Wow! Quite "simple" tune, but extremely well done.
