I got it. I was reading the characters, and the characters are wrong. That's why I was confused. It sounded like Mandarin Chinese but read funny, so I thought it was perhaps Cantonese (Chinese) or Taiwanese (Chinese) or, going on a limb here, Hakka. Thanks to whoever liked my comment above.
