If the music is not written for violin, then you have to decide bowing and bow direction for yourself. However, if it is written expressly for violin, then there are little symbols that represent the down and the up bow. They're not all marked, only where it is necessary.
Hia. This may seem a daft questionbut how do you know in a song whether you go up or down bow. Often i find music with no signs is there a rule or some pattern?
Wow, this was huge for me and it is really counter intuitive because if you have been playing for awhile you know that the awful surface sound is not what you want because there is not enough weight on the string we/I tend to press to hard. This ends up choking the sound off because of the tension in the hand/fingers. What happens if you really relax that hand is you get the sound you are wanting and an effortless stroke. Wow is all can say. THANK YOU
Thanks so much for posting! I have been playing a an amatuer for a while and this is a problem that keeps coming back. It had been frustrating because I couldn't figure out what was killing my tone. Thanks!
It's hard to know what to do or advise people about pain. Your teacher is probably concerned about giving you as much info on violin playing as possible for your money. Have you talked to a doctor or better yet, a physical therapist? I have neck pain, and go to PT.
Hi. This is a good video. I'm 49 and I just started playing again and I'm working on the Bach Sonatas and Partitas. My bow arm shoulder had some issue (lots o' pain) from type 2 diabetes. This was in mid-December and I'm still having pain. I started lessons in January first week. My teacher doesn't seem to care about the fact that my first two lessons have been painful. He has me playing open strings each practice and the square position (bow tip) and triangle (near frog). Thoughts?

I'm glad to hear that your tone improved, and that you were to find that natural bow arm weight that makes for a warm rich sound!
