Don't judge Clinic chops to musical expression & make no mistake this man is a motherfucker when it comes to making music. He plays other instruments and arranges on his albums if people take time to check out.
I dig Donati; very few are better. He's an extensive armada of impressive chops.
Unfortunately, his imagination usually falls short of his technical abilities.
Observers impressed by his long-winded repetitions of short but ultra-complex rudiments (like here: the same 3-second rudiment 20+ times) may have missed the more tasteful, sparing use of these same licks by drummers like Rabb & Lang.

he could practice 24 hours a day.. but in the end i believe he doesn't have natural ability and cant put down an interesting solo.. ian paice for example.. started playing at 15 and was just a natural talent but still respect to this guy

I don't think opinions are always right though. I mean, at some point facts are facts whatever your opinion. I think most serious drummers would agree Virgil is probably the best technician about at the moment. But I'm assuming you probably prefer Paice's style and playing to virgil. It's similar when people say Hendrix is the best, when obviously it's not true, but his sound and style makes him the "best" to some people.
I also wouldn't suggest this is really meant to be groove based. Check out some of the other vids maybe, live performances with cab show you some more feel. The reason I mentioned the Iain paice thing is because you said he would eat virgil for breakfast, when it's plain to see he isn't on the same level as Virgil technically. However, if Paice is a cannibal, i take it back ;)
just 8? thats a lot, olympic swimmers dont do that in the pool. well he averaged 8, but would often do more, he lives and breathes drums, diet etc right down to his yoga for dexterity. even when he toured in the 80s/90s he would be in his hotel all day honing his skills, tru dedication to his craft.

Interesting to know that donati was prominently influenced by paice in his younger days so they may be more similar in their playing styles on closer inspection. I'm am also very honoured to come from the same city that Virgil was born in!

Oh and as far as you saying he's "showing off." That really tells us you're not a drummer or don't understand the concept at all.
What do you think soloing is? Each individual has the opportunity to "show off" or showcase his or her ability and if speed is one attribute they possess then speed may be showcased.
Donati should not showcase his speed because you don't care for it? Wrong!
Not to mention he possesses much more than just speed as you'd have us believe.
You can't be a drummer.

not once did i say showing off was a bad thing... so you obviously have no idea. I said that he likes to show off his speed, whereas paice likes to show off his creativity and feel. It was my opinion that i didn't like his style i don't see why i should be given a freaken lecture by donati's obsessive fan base to try and convince me that i'm wrong- because i'm not.

he could practice 24 hours a day.. but in the end i believe he doesn't have natural ability and cant put down an interesting solo.. ian paice for example.. started playing at 15 and was just a natural talent but still respect to this guy

I don't think opinions are always right though. I mean, at some point facts are facts whatever your opinion. I think most serious drummers would agree Virgil is probably the best technician about at the moment. But I'm assuming you probably prefer Paice's style and playing to virgil. It's similar when people say Hendrix is the best, when obviously it's not true, but his sound and style makes him the "best" to some people.

I also wouldn't suggest this is really meant to be groove based. Check out some of the other vids maybe, live performances with cab show you some more feel. The reason I mentioned the Iain paice thing is because you said he would eat virgil for breakfast, when it's plain to see he isn't on the same level as Virgil technically. However, if Paice is a cannibal, i take it back ;)

just 8? thats a lot, olympic swimmers dont do that in the pool. well he averaged 8, but would often do more, he lives and breathes drums, diet etc right down to his yoga for dexterity. even when he toured in the 80s/90s he would be in his hotel all day honing his skills, tru dedication to his craft.

Incredible!! But Portnoy is better. Look Constant Motion from sysdrumatic chaos between 4:00 and 5:00. Virgil is incredible but Portnoy is God!!

There is no way in hell that Mike Portnoy ever comes a fraction of what Virgil Donati is. Look at Planet X, it's like a better version of Dream Theater, with a way better drummer, and no singing. Mike Portnoy has no independence at all.
