1. Deltics have 2 napier engines. if the one in my video was only running on 1 engine it would not be allowed on the mainline. other locos such as class 47s and class 31s only have one engine but they are allowed on the mainline. 125s or HSTs have one engine per power car but you get 2 power cars in a set
2. some of the people on the platform had tickets to travel on other trains but those on the platform like me who were there to see the deltic did not pay to be there
Same here jules I cannot understand why they have to drag a relief loco about its such ashame for that old Deltic that can't old loco like that any good
Nice shot and she certainly is capable of major power as we got upto 102 mph on the Weymouth trip last year and back on time at stafford, indeed early! I dont think her exhausts have been modified though just welded up time and again as they get quite hot.
That isnt being opened right up its only being put just passed the first notch, very few drivers would just open up a Deltic if you have just a Deltic light engine and open it up from standstill the sound blows you away, and you are pinned back in the seat they were awesome...
is it just me or does she sound a little too 'clean'? when you watch the old deltics videos that dave maxey did years ago, you could hear these beasts bellowing about 2 minutes before they got to the camera! have her exhausts been modified in any way?
@jules46443 i dont know. i mean your camera is a million times better than the ones people were using in 1965! lol i dont see how uploading could blank out mic pick up either. i have travelled behind her 4 times on the main line and she certainly performs right! we clocked her at 107mph approaching crewe on her first main line outing, we even overtook an hst! how cool is that?
@Leetrainz thanks lee like i say though they could've easily attached and detached it at london and harringay they also repainted an intercity 47 and another in experimental blue as for 47270 though i heard from somewhere that they planned to keep it in blue for the forseable future
nice sound, the class 57 must of added another 3 or 4 coach loads to the back, making 22 work and sound harder which is what we want. can i ask why you hate wcrc so much? far worse than having a dead 57 on the back
i will agree with you about it adding weight to the train but having a wcrc47/57 on the rear of the train does ruin the shot particualy for steam tours also the colour scheme is rubbish to most people would agree with this that they'd rather see a class 33/37/47 in heritage colour like br green/blue/LL blue for example over their MK1 maroon it's just rediculous
They have to have a backup loco on the ECML because the delay penalties are so high. Despite the extra weight (the train was the equivalent of load 16), 22 managed long periods of running at the maximum 100mph and crept up to 104 at one point and possibly 108 if my phone's GPS is to believed. We even managed to accelerate to 95 UP-HILL at one point...
If we had a rake of blue-grey stock, I'd prefer a blue diesel on the back, but with WCRC maroon stock, one of their locos blends in best.
@prestonstation even still they could atleast take the back up engine off and run it light behind the tour like they did with the corontation railtour a couple months ago
@julesI just don't see the point of complicating things by requiring a second path. If the train was recreating something authentic with matching loco and stock liveries, then fine, but that wasn't the case here. The 57 was needed to take the train out of KX anyway. maybe it bothers some folk, but not me. There were enough problems thrown at this tour by NR and other operators as it was, more complication would just have made things worse.
Railways are operated for the people who use them, not photographers who complain when a Commonwealth bogie is used instead of a B1 on a mk1, hardly any 33s, 37s and 47s are in BR Green or Blue, plus most railtours are about 10 coaches in length so it is pretty hard to get a full shot of a train at once in a still.
@JBTEvans infact i reguraly use the railways to go places for the day also i don't complain because certain coaches have commonwealth bogies cos they're like the MTU in a HST they extended the MK1's life in a sence and from what your saying yes i would prefer a green 33, 37 or 47 anyday over maroon also the last time i checked this is a video not a photograph

5* mate, we just spotted you as we went past :-) We was clocking 22's progress with GPS. On the way down to London, we nudged 106MPH!! at one point. 80mph at various points on some sections of the slow. On the way back cruising at a just under the magic ton. Fantastic day & great to see 22 do it's thing. Cheers.
@jules46443, We did some good long bits at over 95MPH, number 22 was like in animal mode!! Wish you could of been on it mate. Having the window open & listening to that pair of Napiers sing..... what a day :-) Roll on september when 22's let loose on the ECML again :-)
i particualy don't like them because of their colour scheme and because they tend to tail trains hauled by steam or diesels like the deltic as seen here they do get quite annoying and boring too
@DRS47501 thanks and yes that is true but they could've taken it on and off at london and ran it light the rest of the time cos they basically took 5mph off the top speed of the deltic
2 questions and I'm new to train watching.
1. The Deltics I've seen have one powercar. The 125"s have 2. Why? Is it a difference in horsepower?
2.Those people on the platform filming this stuff...do they have to pay to be there?

I wouldn't go as far as to call 47/57s ugly, I think them rather handsome, a bit more refined than the Deltics....
cornholio435 1 month ago
@cornholio435 i do like the 47s/57s but i don't like the one on the rear or any in the maroon colour scheme. please note this is my opinion

That "ugly" loco on the back is a Class 57. Pretty similar to a 47 which are favourites among a lot of people. And it was probably used for air con.
Bulmanism 7 months ago
@Bulmanism is ugly and probably not needed when flying along at 100MPH more efficient air con
