The mutual nature of subscriptions... this has been a point of contention since the beginning, from what I can tell. The "tit for tat" aspect of it seems to be partly linked to the MySpace-esque nature of "friending" where each person automatically winds up on the other's list, where as this subscription feature is really just on par with reserving a seat in someone's personal audience.
And, no, unless I intend to watch the show, I don't reserve a seat.
@OhCurt Also, it seems YT is trying to up the subscription numbers across the board in some desperate attempt to keep people connected here so they won't go elsewhere, but out of my roughly 4,400 total subscribers, I get maybe 1/10 viewership (something that seems to be typical). So around the time I hit the 2,000 subscriber mark, I shut off new subscriber notifications completely. It was clear people were only using the feature to put their own names out there, essentially rendering it spam.
@OhCurt Thanks for posting this! I've heard that some people do tend to subscribe back out of courtesy when they receive a subscription, but I've never met anyone who told me they do that (automatically). It is interesting also to see YouTube using the language of a "favor" when encouraging people to subscribe back.

Interesting study and although tentative, I think it is a valid conclusion.
