Unlikely, Nintendo would gladly sacrifice performance to match a form factor similar to the original Wii. This would also keep costs lower, something else Nintendo is definitely interested in.

#2 is definitely the case, but R700 based probably meant something more along the lines of the Radeon 4670. At 40nm the Radeon 4670 would have a TDP low enough for a small console like the Wii U, the manufacturing price will be very low as the die size will be less than 90mm² and it will still able to outperform the PS3 and 360.

I'd guess that the 720 will use something based more along the lines of the integrated Radeon 6550D which would fit in line with the rumored 20% advantage over Wii U.

how good would it be if next gen was like last gen where graphics didn't mean much and it was about games and innovation. I look for that time. These rumours certainly give hope to that. If Microsoft is indeed taking a conservative appraoch (I think they should for affordiability sake), then sony would likely follow just to keep third party connected to them.
