@MasterKratia Um before you battle the gym i believe you do some event ingame then go to the forest to the right of the gym and battle a couple people (make sure you have a slot open) and the very last person there will give you the one that your starter is supereffective against which means that monkey will be super effective against the gym leader

Blarg, this comment is late. I'm sorry. The werid stat raising move that Yorterrie (the dog thing) used is called "Cheer Up". It raises your attack and defense(?) by one level. The fire attack that the monkey used is called "Grill Flame", it's slightly stronger than Ember.
