Awesome review Pat. My Dad and I used to play the Bases Loaded NES games alllll the time when I was a kid. I'm definitely going to find Baseball Stars though, definitely the best looking classic baseball game I've seen.
...the 2nd baseman. This fielder will get closer to the 2nd baseman and will intercept his throw. Well, since he's getting closer and closer to the 2nd baseman, they'll be throwing the ball back and forth to each other. They'll get so close that the new fielder will overthrow the ball past the 2nd baseman and into the outfield. You can get to 3rd after that's happened. It's one of those great exploits that takes the fun out of the game play but introduces a new challenge. Great video!
baseball stars might be the best NES game of all time, not just the best baseball game. that's my take. but i recommend not building a team of your dreams...and then having the game slightly shift in the console so that the entirety of your pathetic life gets washed away in that instance.
well, at least it was a maturing experience. i no longer dedicate my life to the game.
This game was such a sleeper hit there was a shortage, my copy I ordered for xmas didn't arrive until february. You couldn't find it anywhere, I must have called every dealer in the gamepro mag.. Baseball Sim 1.000 I remember buying a baseball stat book and programming in my own 1991 teams, and tweaking it to perfection.
@RichieEastside The MAX is fine...most people don't know how to use it properly (for whatever reason). You still have to PRESS in the direction you want to. The thumb holder is just that, to hold your thumb.
@PatTheNESpunk Ya I know about that, I just always thought it felt strange slipping and sliding around like that...got one for Christmas along with Bayou Billy, Blaster Master, Wrestlemania and a couple of other games in like 1990 so seeing it again brought back some memories at least ;-)
spent lots of hours on this game...good times...Pretty sure Jacks was supposed to be Reggie Jackson...If he bats left handed then probably, if not then no clue who it is...
Great vid man. Brings back some good memories of skipping school just to play those games with my friends. Its funny to see the GOLD Zelda game you have also. Sweet.
Pause it at 3:28 you'll see a pitcher named "Sasuke" ranked #4 for you Naruto fans! This was my favorite baseball game for the NES! I liked baseball Simulator 1.000 for the SNES
I found the quickest way to power up a created team was to make a first team, fire everyone and then power up every players prestige to max. Then create your own team, fire everyone and power up the prestige again. Play a two player game and get them out three times. Then hit each of your players in the bottom of the first inning until you get 10 runs and the game is called. Once that is done the computer will give you a ton of money. Each game takes a minute to play at the most.
Great Review! I still love this game! Play it all most everyday on an emulator. Made my own teams and play season after season. Thought I was the only one. HAHA
This game was awesome. My favorite baseball game hands down! Some of my best memories growing up was during the summers of 1990 and 1991. My cousin and I made up teams and played this game constantly. The only bad thing was that we could never get a full long season finished. It would always erase. So we got smart and just started playing short seasons.
I've been gaming for over 25 years and Baseball Stars is still my number 1 favorite Baseball game! Great review. I was fond of Baseball Simulator 1000 also. But the season mode was horrible! I liked the special abilities! lol
Great review. The only thing I hated about Baseball Stars was that the memory capabilities of the game didn't work after continued use. I would build up a great team and then I'd reset the game and, bam!, my team would disappear. I was gutted as a kid.
I would argue that baseball stars beat a lot of games up to the level of super nintendo/genesis games. It had a lot going for it. Great review for a great game.
Honestly, "Baseball Stars" was a head of its time and is definitely a great NES baseball game but as far as just consistant game play (meaning it's easy to play and the controls are easy and consistant) my favorite NES baseball game was "Bad News Baseball". This game was also well ahead of its time. Although you couldn't track season stats i loved the simple 1-8 ranking system on players running speed and arm strength as well as the A-B-C for fielding ability. I loved this baseball game best!
RBI baseball was pretty good with its MLBPA license, but beyond that, there aren't really any game options, which brings it down to earth. Baseball Stars to me was such a giant leap forward in gameplay, graphics, and options, that it takes the best NES baseball game title.
My games aren't actually divided by genre, but alphabetically (it's easier for the large amount of games I have). It was just a coincidence that most of the baseball games are by the B's. :p Notable exceptions are Tecmo Baseball, Legends of the Diamond, Major League Baseball, Little League Baseball, RBI Baseball 1-3, and Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball. There could be a couple more but I'm too lazy to think.

Good review. The game is a bit on the impossible side when you try to match up a "made from scratch" team against the CPU-driven teams.

RBI Baseball. Hands down the best baseball game on the NES. Can't do as many things as in Baseball Stars, but it's simple and fun to play.
